Subject: 2001 dakota SLT v6 9mpg in city IP: Logged
Message: Hello, I have a 2001 Dakota v6 SLT, and
currently I get 9 mpg in the city. I
changed the pcv sensor, changed plugs
and wires wires, have a cold air intake,
and changed the tps. Tires are inflated
properly. Why am gettin such bad mpg's?
I have not changed O2 sensors yet, and
have not touched anything with the EGR
system

Message: Check for codes.
Turn ignition on and off and on and off and leave on.
Don't crank the car, just like if u were just listening to the
radio or if you are trying to roll ur windows down.
On the cel it should tell u a code, if there are no codes then
it's gonna display "p-done" I believe.
If no codes show up then You might have a o2 sensor that's
lazy. Don't get Bosch o2 sensors, they are crap. Get an NGK
o2 sensor.
You have 2, upstream and downstream.
And as far as I know, my 2000 slt 3.9 doesn't have an egr
valve.
But don't listen to me, I'm just an idiot :P

Message: Well if ya wanna gamble they might be lazy sensors.
But u should check the other sensors too, check for voltage
and see if they are all running right.
Map sensor
IAT sensor
Engine coolant temp sensor
IAC sensor(u should clean this one but just becareful u don't
move the spindle which is the metal tube under the cap, don't
twist it)
All these sensors can drop mileage.

voltage. I'm gonna have to use the thing
that looks like a screwdriver that
connects to the battery correct?

Message: Warren, is your truck a regular cab, club or quad cab?
4wd or 2wd?
auto or manual trans?
Stock size tires and wheels?
I hope you changed the cap and rotor when you changed the plugs and wires. If not you've only done half of the tuneup. And no you do not have an EGR to worry about. You may only have 2 O2 sensors. It depends on the emissions package the truck came with. My '00 only has 2 O2 sensors. And the one before the catcon affects mileage the most.

And u should check ur fuel pressure. Tool or fuel pressure
can be rented at auto zone.

Message: If you can afford it, just do a complete tune up again. If not just change the cap and rotor with a good quality cap w/ brass contacts and a quality rotor. If it smells rich it could be a few things but most likely the precat O2 sensor. If you have access to a scanning tool that can read live data while the engine is running that would be the ticket.

Message: Alright so I have 4 o2 sensors. And when I scanned my truck
running at operating temp. The volts did not read over .9 the
whole time. I would have juss checked the specs for them.
But I can't seem to find them. Also my oil pressure at idle is
supposed to be 6 psi. At idle mine is 11 to 14 psi, could that
mean anything?

specs for the map vacuum in

volts for the map sensor are good
on that I found spec. U think I
should clean the map sensor, IAC,
IAT, and tps?
