Subject: Fuel starvation at half tank?
IP: Logged

Message:
I've got a 95 Dakota V6 2wd. I've run into a problem recently and wonder if any of you have had something similar happen.

I've noticed that when I get to about a 1/2 tank or less that my truck acts like it's running out of gas. I know it isn't a bad gas gauge thing because I track my mileage and whenever I refill when I'm having these problems, it only takes about 10 gallons to top it off. When I get to half a tank, the car starts to sputter and then it chugs until it shuts down. Today when I unscrewed the gas cap to put gas in the tank, I noticed that there seemed to be some serious suction on my gas cap. This has me wondering if the gas cap I recently purchased might have something to do with the problem. I've been dealing with the issue since summer, which is when I lost my stock gas cap. Could it be that the old gas cap had some kind of venting system on it, and this new gas cap is causing a problem?

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Could be your replacement gas cap. Next time it does that just stop, take off the gas cap then put it back on and see if that cures it. If it does relive the problem, replace the cap.

i have had that problme before with my 94 dakota. v6 2wd.
for me, it turned out to be the fuel pump.
at first, i just tried to keep it full. but it got progresively worse. finally it got to where it would barely pull itself and finally stall.
if i sat on the side of the road for a few minutes it would restart and run ok for a little bit.
anyway, i tried several things first and finally put a fuel pump in it and it was fixed.

you'll have to take the bed off the truck to access the tank.
it is really very simple.
un-hook the filler neck from the bed. remove the gas cap and take out 3 screws (mine were phillips head) unplug the tail light wiring harness. (mine had a plug on each side)
my truck is an exended cab and had 8 bolts holding the bed to the frame. me and 1 other guy lifted the bed and moved it back far enough to get to the tank. lifting it over the rear tires was the hard part.
disconnect the wires and hoses from the sending unit. unscrew the retainer ring and lift out the pump/ filter/ sending unit assembly.

BUT, before i did all that, i would most certainly try a new gas cap. are there any auto salvage yards in you area? i'm sure you could pick up a "stock" cap for a couple bucks or less.

good luck.
kevin
