Message: Dakota49, do you have to move the cam in order to turn the
drive gear? Or can it be moved with the cam still in place? Its
the difference of pulling just the intake and taking the entire
engine apart if you know what I mean. the drive gear is just
out side its limits and that could explain everything. I Bet the
injector

Message: If you are talking about the timming chain and
if it jumped no you can not just turn it you
need to replace it
As far as the injector sync there are a lot of
posts telling you how to set that stock cam +3
degrees is the best setting

Message: No I'm talking about the distributor drive gear. I Never set it
at ten o'clock so my injectors are firing at closed valves. I'm
just asking can I pull that gear right up through the
distributor hole our do I have to move the cam out of the
way then turn the gear until its lined up correctly then put
the cam back in?

Message: If everything else is installed correctly. All you have to do is remove the clamp on the distributor and pull it straight out. Then rotate the engine to have #1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke. Reinstall the distributor so the rotor points to the #1 plug wire and you'll be close enough for it to start.

Message: Was Cylinder #1 Top Dead Center on the compression Stroke? Both valves closed. And what is this 10 o'clock? Once #1 is TDC you need to install the distributor so the rotor points at the #1 plug terminal. My truck isn't here now and it's been a while but I don't think the #1 plug terminal is at 10 o'clock.

Message: Ok the book says that the gear slot must align with the driver
side intake manifolds first bolt on the forward side of the
engine. Or ten o'clock. All is done and I'm not getting it to
start. I've bean doing this since day one but the only
diference is I'm certain its on tdc and I'm not touching it
again cause I don't want to lose it. I'm back to I don't have a
clue what to do.

Message: Casey, what daddio is saying, is you need to have the dist. in line with the #1 plug wire for it to work, but the fuel timing needs to be correct as well, that's why the dist. drive gear needs to be in correctly, and it sounds as though you have corrected that, now its time to try to get the ignition and fuel timing correct. Like Larry of J&J said there are some post here that tells you how to do that, I would but I have never done that before. You may be able to try to set the ignition then go from there and turn the dist. just a little at a time and see what happens. I live in Northwest Arkansas if you live some place close to me I would be glad to try to come and help you with your truck.
Good luck

Message: ok, there is a post about putting a volt meter on the dist. pick up. What i beleive i must do is hook up the meter, then turn the crank(which is at top dead center of the #1 cylinder) until the volts read 5v. then turn the distributor until it reads zero again? I dont understand completely what is being said.
Another option is to by the OBD1 hand help programmer: http://www.jegs.com/i/Innovate+Motorsports/540/3837/10002/-1
which sounds like just as much work when you have never used it before. After all the time i have put into this truck 400 is not a lot of money to get this thing runnuing. I am gonna try to call a local mech. shop and see if they will give me some help at what ever price.
