Just trying to get the best mpg i can out of my 99 sport 3.9 cc 2x4. I got 160xxx on it but wont get ride of it till it dies have had it for almost ten years now and once it does I'll get the same thing but a 4x4. I get about 21 miles to the gallon right now. I got 235/75r15 on it for tires. Have a cold air intake, brand new coil/distributor cap/wires and plugs. Was thinking of getting an electrical water pump anyone have one on the dakota wondering if it makes a big difference. Plus what if i take my exhaust apart I hear that certain exhausts make it sound like a rice burner don't want that.

forget the elect pump just remove the big clutch
fan and replace it with a elect at least 3000 cfm
and a flexolite direct read adjustible thermo
and you will gain around 2mpg

I pull around 24 25 in the summer and around 20
in the winter if you want to see all my mods just
do a search for mpg on this board

Winter grade gas BS Colder temps can see taken a bit more to warm up use more gas but cannot see pulling that kind of mileage J & J not everyone has the time swap cams work on cylinder head porting making mods to improve mileage if that was the case why didn't these engineers do this ?

I like having a knowledgeable member to ask questions of but, J&J I too kinda think you tend to come off arrogant. We get it, your good and know your stuff, but you also have all the tools and facility of the manufacturer. Just to letting you know so you don't continue to offend people . Keep the advice coming.

I don't see anything offensive, he's one of the most knowledgeable and helpful posters.

The engineers did not do this because they have to meet emissions laws. Many of these mods will result in a vehicle that may not pass testing.

he didn't sould offensive to me. I ended up putting an electric fan in but won't be able to tell if there is much a difference considering it is winter time right now. Cuz I run my truck for a while before i use it to let it heat up and i put weight in the back to help me in the snow because it is only a 2x4 but hoping to see something thanks for the help

I to don't see anything offensive here either, and j&j is very
helpful in tips for these trucks, I have tried some of these
mods and haven't notice improvement in mpg's or better
reponse. I dont why some here that post and some have
100,000 or more and expect better gains and mpgs come on
we need to be all realistic here. And your also right doing any
of these mods will change emissions and cause other issues
that could be unknown and ruin your truck

Not necessarily ruin, just increase emissions. If you have testing, that's a problem. Where I live, testing is no longer done for 1995 and older (OBDI). 1996 and newer are no longer dynoed and measured, they just check for fault codes.

If you increase emissions with any mod or alter anyway your gas mileage would decrease?

Not necessarily. There are situations where mods can increase both emissions (one or more of the major pollutants - HC, CO, NOx) and gas mileage. For instance, advance the ignition timing curve, and you raise HC emissions but sometimes gain power and gas mileage.

see the question of a fan and water pump was questions regarding different part that run off the motor. The less that run off the motor the less stress that is on my motor which makes the difference with mpgs. I have already striped out the back seat of the truck and put lighter seats in for the front. Along with taking the bumpers off and making custom bumpers that are about half the weight as the stock ones. Since the lighter the truck the more it gets also.

If your original post of 21 MPG is an average between city and highway, you rdoing good. My '00 QC 3.9 5spd gets about 19 in town and 23 hwy.

Daddio how many miles on your truck? I have 104+ miles my
mileage like I posted earlier, runs as best for the mileage
maintain since I bought it new. Not burning oil very little if so.
All these suggestions to improve mpg's. Went through every
mod no gain there, intake plenum not leaking, timing chain
not an issue, fuel sync properly set to spec tried that mod
nothing and every sensor been swap out and no change. Put
factory O2's in once at 50,000 than just recently when I hit
100,000 as maintenance items. Now tell me whats going on.

My truck has about 140,000. Original O2's, V8 TB, CPS mod, Removed mechanical fan and clutch, Underdrive Crank pulley, A/Z plug wires, Cap and Rotor, NGK Vpower plugs. I run Valvoline 10w30 dino oil.

As you can see nothing fancy. Maybe because my truck is a light weight. NO power accessories at all. P/S and P/B that's it.
