Subject: This makes no sense! IP: Logged
Message: Ok, I've had problems lately with my oil pressure. I haven't had any lights go on or anything but at idle the guage is tending to drop way low. Sometimes halfway between the minimum OK and the L line. Today I was turning onto an off ramp and saw pepsi truck and decided to see if I could beat it to the end of the ramp.(It was on the highway already.) So I make the turn and punch it. My truck was about 50 rpm from the Reddish orange area of the tach. (Doesn't look like a redline to me.) And I look down and for the first time in a long time my oil pressure is almost to the max OK line and it stays there for about 2 miles at 60 mph and then gradually goes down. By the time I stop at a gas station 5 miles away it's right back to the spot just below the min OK line but it shows much better pressure while the truck is being driven. Any clue what the prob is? I'm poor so I can't afford to buy stuff I don't need. Any help could be appreciated. This is somewhat abbrev. on the total scope of the oil problem but I wanted it to stay as short as possible.

Message: I would start by checking to make sure there's enough oil in the engine. If it's low on oil it's just sloshing around in the pan and only making pressure when the pump pickup can suck some in.....

Message: 92dakotahd, u dont say what engine u have and do u change ur own oil or do u have someone else do it for u. i have a 94 dak v6 and just had mine in the dealer for service and they overfilled the oil by 1 qt. that can cause engine problems like low oil pressure and eventually engine damage. my engine calls for 4 qts and dealer argued with me till i showed him my manual. made them remove 1 qt of oil.

Message: I thought that posting this on the V6 board would show I have a v6 but I know everybody posts everywhere. I change my own oil and just looked at my book for my 92 and it says 4.5Qts with a filter change, so is the extra .5 qt causing that much of a problem?

Message: No. But does it still have the 4.5 quarts that you put in there last time?

Message: if u ck ur dipstick and it shows overfull then yes u can have the problem i described its stated in my manual. better to be 1/2 qt low than 1/2 qt over. when u drain oil there is always some residual left in engine, i put oil in and ck as i go, even with filter change i use max of 4 qts.

Message: I'm saying that the only time I've seen an oil gauge do that was when I had an F-250 work truck that had 1 qt left out of the original 7 qts. The only reason I didn't lock it up was the oil guage swinging wildly back & forth. That's all I'm saying. Other than that it may be the sending unit.

Message: Definitely sounds like the sending unit (wife's Jeep did almost the same thing).

Message: What happened was a fluke in a way. I don't get the truck that high on the Tach very often. But I was actually excited just to see the oil pressure get that high. It's depressing to see it that low all of the time, the truck runs alright (not great, I've seen better days) but this has been a prob for like 35K miles. I'd thought about a high flow oil pump but the install labor on that alone is scary.

Message: What's the difference between the sending unit and oil pump? Or are they the same thing. I almost put a new pump in but I'm not mechanically inclined enough to do it my self and it would cost like 250-300 to have a shop do it.

Message: Another thing you should check is your flow back to the pan from the upper-end. Most people don't think about it but if oil get trapped in the valves your pump/scavenger could be sucking air hence no or low pressure. Sending unit is the electrical component that tells your oil gauge what to tell you.

7 year post
just loosen the drain plug for a sec. re-insert plug. re-check level. No need to completley drain.
I must be on another planet.
