Hey guys, I have a 1992 Dakota, 2 wheel drive, automatic transmission. For about 8 years now my transmission has been shifting extremely rough when starting out. For a few blocks and after one stop sign, I have to let off the gas for the truck to shift into 2nd gear and sometimes 3rd. It seems like after the transmission locks up and gets pressurized it is fine. Every shift though is rough, 1st is the worst. I let the truck sit for about a month and a half and now it barley moves at the start. I put the truck in drive or reverse and the truck barley crawls. I have to hold the break and rev the engine before I can get it to move. I was thinking the torque was going bad but then I was reading and thought maybe the shift linkage was not adjusted right when I put a new engine in. I just don't have enough experience with transmissions to make a diagnosis and thought I would get the problem out to get other opinions. I just don't want to put a new transmission in a 1992. Thanks for the help.

When was the last time it was serviced?
No mention of last fluid and filter change.

When fluid and filter are changed , may be able to adjust bands to spec again, which could fix
the problem .
Note that fluid needs to be synthetic
known as ATF-4 I believe .
Do not use Dexron or similar .

I havent touched the transmission service wise since I put the new engine in back in 2002. I was under the impression that if you haven't changed the fluid in 3 or 4 year you should not open the transmission at all?

It's odd that you would drive it like this for 8 years. Nevertheless, the original fluid was 7176, so you can't hurt it with that. However, ATF+4 supersedes all previous fluids and should be used for any fluid change. And you should start by changing fluid and filter, adjusting bands as suggested. While you have the pan off, tighten the 3 torx screws on the solenoid pack on the passenger side of the valve body. They loosen over time, and then the transmission often won't go into O/D or release lockup when decelerating.

If bands were adjusted too tight by the previous owner, it would cause rough, late shifts. Let us know what kind of debris you find in the pan. A little bit of metal particles around the magnet (say, about the size of the tip of your little finger or less) is not cause for alarm, neither is a tiny bit of gray muddy residue. More than that may indicate worn clutch bands or worse, if you find pieces of metal.

My dad was the first owner and he put the new engine in. I am the second owner. Now like I said I don't have a lot of experience with transmissions. These bands you talk about I have no idea what they are so a little more elaboration would be helpful. Second, are there torque specs on the valve body? I don't want to just crank on them until the valve body cracks. Is there a book that anyone recommends on the A500 that would help me out? Thanks guys again for the help.

I have a '92, I"ll look them up for you. I think the screws that hold the solenoid pack are 20 inch-lbs.

and read under Planetary Gearsets to learn more. Actually, the whole article is worthwhile.

Thanks so much. I wont be getting to the truck this week or next but definatly the following. I will get back to you on the metal particles in the filter and pan then. A vacation to work on the truck is what I need.

I changed the fluid and filter. The fluid wasn't bad, very little metal and the metal shavings were very small and very thin. The filter was dirty, especially around the fluid inlet/outlet. I didnt have time to adjust the two bands but I did notice a change in the engine rpm when the truck shifts. It only revs high to shift into 2nd not any other gear, and I cant even feel the truck go into overdrive. The other reason why I didnt adjust the bands was I could not find the internal on, second the outside of the transmission was very rusty and andy change there would just result in more problems. I think the tranny is the least of my problems now though. I found that the front two cab body mounts have rusted away from the body. I just hope the truck lasts me another four years. Thanks for the help this far, it helped a lot.
