Subject: Never Ending Mis-fires IP: Logged
Message: Ok, my nephew's truck is killing me. Never ending mis-fires! All cylinders, intermitting.
This is a new one for me, I simply can't figure it out.
97 3.9 V6
Misfires started about a year ago on cyl 1 and now we get random mis-fires across all cylinders.
We replaced the following:
Plugs, Wires, Cap/Rotor, Coil, Distributor, all 6 fuel injectors, also replaced several vacuum lines as some looked beat.
The entire ignition system is new at this point and still getting mis fires, throwing the same codes and you can actually feel it mis under acceleration.
WTF?
No smoke in the exhaust, no moisture, no foul'd plugs, not burnin oil.
I am at a loss!

Message: We have not swapped out the computer. We did have to change the crank shaft pos sensor for an unrelated issue this past year, but have not done the camshaft pos sensor.
I've worked on cars for many years now, I never actually seen a computer be bad.

Message: I don't know if that could be caused by the bad connection just under the power dist. box under the hood or not, but I have read where a lot of people have had problems with that. Mine is too old for that problem, but I think what you would need to do is remove the tape and about 5 inches down from the power box (fuse box) there is a connection that gets corroded and you may need to clean and resolder the wires. There are a lot of post here on how to do that so it shouldn't be too hard to find a post that tells exactly how to do that.
Good Luck

Message: Plug wire routing? never heard that one before.
I'll have him check both, I don't believe the wires were even close to each other though, they weren't all tied up or anything.
I'll have him check the wires by the fuse block as well.
Thanks!

Message: '97 should not have any problems with that splice under the PDC. Did you check or change the distributor? If it's worn it will cause that. Also, a sloppy timing chain can give the same symptoms.

Message: Brand New distributor. Never checked the timing chain.
You can actually feel the mis fire, so it isn't like I am just getting a code. It is a true random mis.

Message: Try a different brand of injectors. I had the same problem with a set of 24# injectors on my 5.9. I ran them for 1hr. I had multiple misfires. I bought a dif set of 24# injectors, guess what. No problems. I had the problem ones checked, they tested fine. To this day, we don't know why the didn't work correctly.

I replaced all 6 injectors with 6 new injectors, I can see that all 12 injectors have the same problem. The original OEM were in there.

"Brand New distributor."
Cap or whole thing?
If you changed the whole dist. unit did you reset
fuel injector syn.???

I am not sure what you mean by resetting the fuel inj?
The ECU has been cleared and reset.

Message: Well there's your problem,1st thing before working
on a motor is getting to know how it fires & how it
functions. Turning the Dist. on these motors does
not set the timing. That is all controlled by the
pcm. Turning the dist. shaft on these motors
controls the fuel injector sync. It is that which
you need to now get set properly.

Message: As a rough adjustment, turn the crankshaft to TDC on cyl #1, and look down at the ignition rotor from above. There is an index mark scribed in the edge of the dist housing. Line up the center of the rotor tip with that index mark by loosening the dist hold-down bolt and turning the dist housing. It's OK to err on the advanced side by nearly 1/2 of the width of the rotor tip. Your goal is to set this to between 0 and +3 degrees advanced of the index mark. Too far behind and it will misfire, backfire and run poorly if at all. Only has to be retarded 3-6 degrees to cause problems.

He'll go order a new bushing and get the tool to replace it.
This would explain the problem across all cylinders.
