Message: I got a 318 motor out of a 98 durango with the wiring harness and computer for it and put it in a 97 dakota that had a 3.9 with a 5 speed in it before. The 3.9 threw a rod through the side of the block and killed the crank so figured a 318 would be better for it. The truck will start with the computer for the 318 but as soon as you give it gas, it dies. I plugged the v-6 computer back up to it and it runs great until you give it gas then it backfires, but stays running. Any ideas would be a great help.

Message: First - it needs the V8 (318) computer .
With it hooked up - check for codes .
Did you move distributor when doing the swap ?
May need repositioned to enable proper fuel
injection sync .
What flywheel are you using ?
Need a V8 flywheel - spark timing .

Message: Ive got the 318 computer from the durango donor vehicle and it starts and then i give it gas, it dies. the distributor was never moved, just took the cap and wires off so it wouldn't get broken. I am using the 3.9 flywheel with the 3.9 clutch set and the crank sensor for 3.9 5 speed tranny and it works great until about 2000 rpms then it backfires, but after 2500 rpms it runs great but doesn't have any power.

Message: As stated earlier, you need the V8 flywheel. The CPS reads from the flywheel so the PCM is trying to fire a V8 like a V6.

Message: If I have the v8 flywheel can I still use the clutch for the 3.9 or do I have to get the clutch for the 318?

Message: I think the V8 clutch may be a bigger diameter than the v6. You may be able to interchange but the larger V8 clutch will last much longer.
Check with you local parts houe to find the diamters on both.

Message: I work for Advance Auto and I checked on the flywheels, clutches, and crank sensors for both the 3.9 and the 318. The 3.9 clutch is 10.5X10X1/18 and the 318 clutch is 12X10X1/1/8. The flywheels are both 143 teeth and the starter is the same for both of them. The crank sensor is the same for both motors also. The only thing that i can think of is that the durango was an automatic and the dakota is a 5 speed so the computer for the durango is not responding with the 5 speed tranny and sending the wrong signals to the computer causing it to shut off when you give it gas because it doesnt know if its in gear or not. Ive got a computer for a 318 speed ordered and I'm going to try it to see if it fixes the problem or not.
