Subject: Clutch Question IP: Logged
Message: Can I take a flywheel and clutch from a 97 3.9 v6 and use it with a 98 318? The 3.9 clutch is 10.4 10t 1 1/8 and the 318 is 12 10t 1 1/8.

Message: I think it will bolt on but going from a 12inch clutch to a 10.4 it won't last long.

Message: The 318 is actually coming out of a 98 automatic Durango.

Message: I trust that you are aware that an 'Automatic'
does Not have a clutch and that therefore the
flywheel is totally different ??
Also - be aware - the spark timing comes from the flywheel - sensor in bell housing .
So the V8 will be different from the V6

Message: The crank sensor that is in the bell housing on the transmission is the same one for a 3.9 v6 and the 5.2 v8. The only difference is the flywheel itself where the v6 flywheel has 6 cutouts in it and the v8 flywheel has 8 cutouts. The spark timing actually comes from the distributor and the fuel mixture comes from the crank sensor and the computer.

Message: Other way around - the fuel injector timing comes from the distributor and the spark timing from the crankshaft position sensor.
Not sure on this engine, but on some, the crank itself may have a different bolt pattern for automatic and manual, for the flywheel. You might want to consult a factory service manual first.

Message: The crank has the same bolt pattern for the flexplate and the flywheel both. I have the flywheel from the v6 on the v8 right now and im getting ready to pull the motor out again to put the v8 flywheel in it. The truck runs with the v6 flywheel but it backfires while idling with the v8 computer and if i plug the v6 computer up to it then it backfires about 2000 rpms. Ive got the truck ready to pull the motor again and hopefully get it on the road this time.
