Subject: bad rear diffs? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2003 SXT with a five speed trans with 44,000 miles on it. A couple of weeks ago I started getting a noise from the rear differential. I called the dealer and the truck's factory warranty had expired so I was on my own on this one.
Since I don't trust the dealer to do this type of job anyway, I found and independent mechanic who specializes in this type of work (if you are in the Warren RI area, i can recommend a great shop). I usually do all my own work, but the differential scares me. The pinion bearing was blown and one of the axle bearings was weak. He replaced all of the bearings in the rear (great job!) while he was in there and charged me a very fair price.
Here's my question. Has anyone else had this sort of problems with the rear diff in their Dakota? I thought that this was very low mileage to have these types of problems.
