Subject: gas filler problem IP: Logged
Message: For the past year my truck has had a problem- when I fill it with gas the filler nozzle over flows and the pump shuts off.
I'm not sure if it's the rollover valve in the tank or what, but the problem forces me to hold the filler lever at 'half-speed' so I don't put too much gas in, causing the pump to shut off.
I have a 1998 V6 Dakota with 311,000 miles on it.
Thanks in advance,

Message: Is this every station you use, or just one station, or just one brand? Some stations sell too little gas to be required to have the vapor recovery nozzles. Have you tried them?

Message: Thanks yea. I'll check it out today and reply.
But what could be clogging it? I'm the only one putting gas in it, and driving it.

Message: So, I removed the filler hose from the filler door and the tank, and inspected it for any clogged areas. The filler hose/breather tube were fine, so I crawled under the truck and checked the tank using a mirror and flashlight and found a 3/4" metal disk resting on the rollover valve.
I think it fell out of a filler nozzle at one of the gas stations I go to. It's about 3/4" o/d with an 1/8" hole that has a flat wound spring attatched through the hole.
I'll go and fill up tomorrow and see if I can't do it without the pump stopping every 3 seconds.

Message: Bob, it hasn't come apart. It's still there. As for the metal piece that I found in the filler tube, near the rollover valve, it might have been a part of my locking gas cap(Fram)that had fallen inside.
I went to pump gas today and the dang pump still would shut off too soon! I'd forgot to mention in previous posts that before the pump would shut itself off, gas would stream out of two vent-like holes in the pump nozzle.
I went to the Dealer and spoke with the parts guy and he wasn't so sure what it could be.

Message: Even when I pour gas from a 5 gallon gas can, I can see the gas isn't flowing to the tank rapidly. The gas floods then slowly flows into the tank.
I just don't get it.

Message: I have a simular problem on my 2005 Dodge Dakota. I took it to the dealer and they replaced the gas tank and while doing so, broke the gas pump and thus replaced that. I paid for the new gas tank and they paid for the pump. I put on a new locking gas cap and they had to re-set the pressure control (?) as my dashboard readout said " locking cap problem". Once they fixed that I was good to go for two weeks when the problem started all over again. I don't think those replacement parts made a difference; perhaps some kind of a gas pressure problem. Perhaps there is a recall? When I try to fuel up, the gas pump just shuts off. I tried several different suppliers, still the same result. I tried several different levels of the nozzle going into the gas tank opening, still it will take a little and the shut off; I note that after a minute, I can put some more gas in but not much???????????????????
