 Subject: Loose Pulley - Water Pump - Fan Clutch

Hello there,
I have a 2000 3.9L V6 that I was driving home the other day when I suddenly noticed a severe squeal and scraping type sound coming from under the hood. When I made it home I noticed the serpentine belt had lost a groove and the slice of belt was wrapped around near the fan blades.
I replaced the belt, started it up, and immediately heard the same noises and found the belt had come off slightly near the water pump pulley. I inspected that pulley further and pulled out some more pieces of belt from behind it and then noticed that pulley has a pretty good wobble. The pulley, nut, fan-blade assembly, and fan clutch all wobble together..
I have been advised that I need to replace the fan clutch; I just can't understand how a new fan clutch would 'fix' the loose pulley (that is on the water pump). I still need to devise a way to hold the pulley so I can get the nut loose (I am thinking of trying a rubber strap wrench on the pulley.
I have never had any problems with it overheating, so I am assuming the water pump is fine; however I have read that the water pump and pulley are the same 'part'.
I am just looking for any advice or clarification someone might be able to give me, as I can't seem to find it in black & white by searching.

Grab the fan and try to wiggle it back and forth,
Could also be the bearings in the water pump let go.

Thanks alot for the replies. I take it then that the bearings are pressed into and basically part of the water pump and not a separate part that I could replace. In other words, I have to replace the entire water pump?
I just want to be sure because replacing bearings is something I can probably do myself once I get the nut behind the fan blade assembly loose, whereas replacing a water pump is probably out of my league because I work alot, don't have a garage and lack most of the tools needed...
