Subject: 98 Dakota Problems IP: Logged
Message: Have a RWD 98 Dakota Sport V6. Here are a couple of my problems, hoping for a bit of help.
1:
Transmission does not want to stay in passing gear and when it is very hesitant or doesn't go at all. If I put the pedal to the floor to try and accelerate to merge onto highway or pass a vehicle, it will not pony up all the time, when it does it will pony up for a second and then drop back into gear. I have also had it slip a couple gears in the process of trying to kick into pass.
2:
Brakes, couple issues. When applying the pedal, at times you will hear a quiet click and the pedal will jump up as the pressure gets stronger, making it very difficult to keep a firm force on the pedal. Brakes all have 60% plus material all around but the pedal is still spongy until this happens. I do feel a bit of pulsating in the pedal when stopping from a higher speed. Also having problems it seems when first driving after the rain or a moist night. Seems like it is the back brakes, when i apply the brakes for the first couple times they will squeal and not grab right away, they then grab very strong and cause a very loud clunking noise from the rear end. This happens for the first 3-4 applications of the brakes and then it is gone.
3:
Loud and annoying squeak from front passenger side, seems to me to be coming from the upper control arm. Happens when hitting bumps, also a sqeual when in reverse and turning the wheel to the right (Wheel Bearing?)

Message: try adjusting the tv cable, on your 98 you need to
pop the cover off the cble neer the bracket and
move the clip 1 notch forward to shrten the cable
these cables will strech a little with age and
need to be readjusted
try that it should solve the problem
The brake problem sounds like either the sensor
on the top of the rear end or if you have 4 wheel
antilock it could also be one of the front sensors
what they do is tell the system if a wheel is
slowing down or begaining to lockup than the system
will release the presure to that wheel and you will feel this on the pedal
The squek could be a lot of things even a bad
shock
Here again check all the electrical connections first
