I have a 97 dakota 3.9L with an exhaust leak
around the passenger side header, any ideas
how to get the bolts off without breaking
them? I also assume there is a gasket that needs
to be replaced in order to solve my problem correct?

Hey,
First of all you need to be sure that the leak is coming from the connecting spot on the manifold. Sometimes the leak may be just because of a tiny pin hole in the exhaust somewhere. In order to get it off without breaking the bolts, get a can of WD-40 and spray all around the bolts and on them and just soak them. Then, let it sit for a day or so and it wouldn't hurt to soak them again and then wait for them to soak and then take them off slowly.

Thanks for the help, I took a good look at it and it seems that the bolts are broke off right at the motor. that mount the heat shield to the header, looks like it's going to be more work than I thought.

Hi,
This happened to me last month. I had started up the truck one mornig and heard a pop. Later on when I started it again I heard a leak but went away after it heated up.
The bolt at the front on the passenger side poped off.
I had one day left on the warrenty (bought it used in Jan, it was a 1998)
The dealer took it in and had to drill and replace 4 bolts on it.
Took the 3.5 hrs, but was covered.
Have fun, this has happened to several other people.
