Subject: check engine light IP: Logged
Message: my check engine light came on about a week ago, i have read the past posts as to possible problems, my question is if my truck is running just fine, is it something to worry about or could i just keep driving it as is? seems like 99% of the time it is a gas cap or cracked hose that doesnt affect performance? thanks for any advice...if it aint broke, dont fix it!

Message: What year is your truck? If it is not a '99 you can codes the codes yourself. Just turn the key in the following sequence within about 15 seconds: on/off/on/off/on, after the last "on" depending what year your truck is, the codes will either flash the CEL or display in the odometer.
You should figure out why the CEL is on. It is on for a reason and not just for aggrevation.

Message: thanks daddio
i thought the display was on the radio only. tried it again and it came up with 0442-EVAP control system, small leak detected. so it looks like it is the gas cap or a cracked hosein the evap, if the truck is running fine...would you fix it or reset the engine light (disconnect neg battery cable) or just drive it?

Message: Reset the PCM and drive it to see if it trips the same code again. Chances are if you happened to open the fuel cap while it was running that would have tripped the code. Or even if the cap was loose, it could have tripped it.
I've got an '00 with about 130k on it and have never had a code trip that wasn't self inflicted.
