I have a 1998 dodge dakota 2wd 165000 miles V6 3.9 My truck has been shifting in and out of overdrive for the past few weeks. If I only drive it for about 30 mins its ok and does not act up. When the truck is in overdrive and I let off the accelerator it will downshift into 3rd gear and when I accel again it will then shift back into overdrive but it will kick kinda hard when it does then as soon as I left off about 2 seconds later it will downshift again. What really has me puzzled is why it will run fine until it gets warm. I replaced the transmission speed sensor. I also replaced the TPS sensor and after I seen that it was still acting up I took it back. I also have adjusted the TV cable a little tighter it got rid of a lot of slipping but did not fix the problem. I did not have a check engine light on but I had my buddy scan it anyway and it brought up a p0753 code and it said 3-4 shift malfunction or something like that. He told me that he thought that overdrive maybe going out, or there could be a sensor or solenoid going out. One that is on the side of the transmission and the other is in the transmission pan. Before I spend anymore money in replacing good parts I wanted to see if anyone has any insight.

You check to see if the solenoid has not come loose
other wise replace it.

Im not that familar with the truck do you know where the solenoid is located? is it in the tranny pan or on the outside of the transmission. Thanks

I called the local dodge dealer and got a price on the overdrive solenoid. He also told me that it was located in the valve body that is accessible after dropping the transmission pan. I have looked online for the part and could not find it the dodge dealer priced it to me for $107.

I want you to read all this over carefully.
As I mentioned earlier check to see if it came
loose. (also while doing so you would check wires)
And why I asked if the speedO needle bounces.

"Not all OD problems store faults. A tps voltage
change of 3% will drop OD. Speed sensor glitch can
drop OD but you might notice a speedometer bounce
as this occurs. There may be a temperature cut out
switch on the pressure line at trans, not all year
models had this switch, its purpose was to drop OD
if the transmission begins to over heat. If your
questioner is pulling a trailer, he may be
overstressing the trans and the cut out switch is
doing exactly what it is suppose to do, disable OD
when trans fluid reaches 230 degrees. Question
needs answer is does it drop in and out causing a
surge or does it drop out and stay out. The OD is
controlled by the computer supplying ground for
the solenoid inside the trans. If there is a
voltage drop on that wire, such as a loose
terminal in a connector, the OD will work for a
while but the resistance causes heat and more heat
increases resistance, eventually the OD will quit.
This however should store an OD solenoid fault."

No the speedo does not bounce. It does though seem to only do this when the truck is hot. But I never completely lose OD I just lose it when I let off the accelerator, then when I apply pressure it will shift back into OD. Another issue that I have that could be related I'm not really sure is that the ABS and BRAKE lights on the dash are on. Sometimes in the morning when I start the truck they will be off and in the evening they are on. I noticed one morning when I started the truck that they were off so I killed the truck and started it again and they were still off. So I may have some electrical issues. I'm going to drop the transmission pan and change the fluid and filter and replace the solenoid sometime this month and see if that cures the problem. Thanks!

That is a speed sensor issue.

I have replaced both speed sensors the one on the transmission and the one on the rear axel and still have the light issues.

Had the ABS / Brake lite issue too along with the crusie not working (due to the fault lites being on). Replaced break lite switch at break peddel and that corrected the problem.
