First off, great site! Kudos!! I gotta 90 Dakota 3.9L 80K original miles truck from a friend who's grandfather was only owner and WELL taken care of. I got it as a project since it spent most of its 20 years sitting in a garage and the transmission is losing reverse and not shifting right into drive. Replacing all seals gaskets etc from sitting so much. Taking out transmission... What is the consensus on removing the exhaust to remove the tranny? It appears that I can just simply move it back and over and it will clear, but would it be easier to take the exhaust off or is it not worth the extra work?

Oh and another thing, I was told by the local mechanic that once I get the transmission fixed and put it back into the truck I may have to take it into Dodge to have them "reset" it so it will work? Whats up with that? This is my first Dodge Dakota project so I appreciate this site and all the wonderful info! I have been going through the archives here on transmissions and havent seen anything about that. Any input is great! Any suggestions on other things I should replace while I got the transmission out would be awesome too!

Ok... getting everything ready to drop tranny. Noticed in transmission wire harness that two wires just hanging and not hooked up to anything that I can see... everything else hooks up to either of the two clips. One is black/blue stripe and the other is white/red stripe? Am I not seeing another hookup as the transmission is not totally out yet? Is this just extra wires that have got beat up just flopping around? Anybody? Old school hobbyist mechanic... first Dodge Dakota? Input great!
