Subject: rebuilt PCM ???
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a couple of questions about the PCM for our trucks.

Does anyone recommend a place where I can buy a rebuilt one from?
Do I need to 'flash' the computer at the dealer once it's installed, or can I just install it and go?
I've read some stories from guys on this site that were very unhappy after getting a flash from the dealer. I hope this isn't necessary.

I have a '98 Dakota V6 automatic with Calif. emissions.
Thanks for your help and suggestions.

I read a post on here about a week ago about remanned PCM's. Whoever it was found a place online, I think out of Florida, that rebuilds them with a warranty and will flash your VIN into it. So no trip to the dealer. That was all these people did is rebuild PCM's. We may have to do some digging here to find it. If I get a chance I'll try to look it up for you.

Thanks Daddio. I'll check them out.

I'm having my truck looked at by my local transmission guy because my truck won't go into overdrive when I get on the freeway. He scanned it during our test drive and said it might be the computer. Could I just flash the old computer to 'reset' the parameters, or does it not work that way?

I doubt it would be the PCM. Did you check for codes? Could be just a solenoid in the tranny.

The guy who rebuilt my tranny about 8 months ago changed 2 sensors in the tranny yesterday and it still ran the same. The fluid was still red and everything else looked fine. That's why he was considering replacing the PCM. I'm dropping it off with him again tomorrow so he can check it over and see if that's really the problem.

Did he check for any codes? Is it overdrive or the torque converter not locking up?

No codes or hidden codes. He uses the red Snap-on brand code reader. It's about as big as a laptop.

He'll call me this afternoon to let me know what he thinks. Also, I've got a buddy at Motion Auto Supply, here in Spokane, that has a place that rebuilds and flashes PCMs. I'll find out today what they go for.

So he replaced a pressure sensor/valve thingy in the tranny and now the truck shifts fine. $100 installed! Lots better than $250 for a PCM which wasn't the problem after all.

Exactly. You nailed it. He hadn't changed it when he rebuilt the transmission 8 months ago. He only charged me for the part- no labor! Man, that saved me a lot of $$$! Thanks for your help on this matter, Daddio.
