Subject: transmission issue, not converter
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 97 3.9 4x4 auto that is quite modified for a 6 banger.

The issue is on take off. It feels like the truck won't pick up first gear. I can manually shift from 2 to D, but even then it won't pick up fast. First gear doesn't seem to be there in manual shifting either.

I took it to a local transmission shop and they took it for a ride and said, "without a doubt its the torque converter". So, me being the person I am, took it to another trans shop and they said the same thing. Almost $200 later, some bloody knuckles, and a lot of time, same thing!

Any suggestions?

Is 'reverse' working ?
I believe that 'low' and 'reverse' use the same band .
Does the engine rev up , but the truck slow to get moving ? This could be converter .
But , if engine only revs as you truck speeds up then = not converter .
Is the 'kickdown' linkage connected ?
How is the vacuum hose which connects to the
'kickdown' actuator --on the firewall ?

Reverse works fine, no issues there. The truck does rev up and moves slow, but the converter was replaced. I took it to the dealership and had it put on the diagnostic, they came up with both of the shift sensors "A" and "B" needing to be replaced. I'll check the vacuum hose. there's a very good chance i over looked that. As for the linkage, it on and adjusted to specs.
Thanks for the help
