Subject: Little oil in filter IP: Logged
Message: When I changed my oil in my 01 dakota, 3.9, the filter was only about 1/3 full. I removed the filter again after running about 1/2 hour, and it was almost empty. Any ideas what could cause this

Message: Was the oil not changed regularly ?
Possible partially plugged 'pickup' screen
or oil pump going bad .
Does it make lifter noise when running ?
What grade of oil ?

Message: No lifter noise, and good oil pressure. Since I've owned it, oil changed regularly with 10W30. Would the engine have a built in filter bypass?

Message: Sorry I skipped the ESP course,
What brand of filter?
If it's Fram you've found the reason/cause

Message: Yea, both old and new were Fram's. After I removed the new filter to check, I replaced it with a Napa but haven't run the truck yet. Are Fram's really that bad to not even allow oil to get into the filter?

Message: They are all cardboard inside (collapse easy)
and have a bypass. What most likely happened is
they collapsed inside and your oil was going
through the filter bypass.
It should not be the pump or screen if you had
good oil pressure. (as you stated)
Wix or NAPA gold are real good filters
(both the same)
No idea who makes the standard napa filters.
Keep watch on your oil and filter now.
(you have been running oil without filtration)

Message: Wix and NAPA are made by Champion Labs (NOT the spark plug company).
Purolator is also good.

Message: I forgot-another thing about the Frams filters is the crappy sealing of the ant-drainback valve.
Back in the late 80s Ford owners were complaining about lifter rattle on startup. It turned out the problem went away when Fram Filters went away. The filters were draining overnight.
