Subject: Transfer case is leaking... IP: Logged
Message: I've got a '96 Dakota V6 3.9L and the transfer case is leaking. At first it was pouring out, I took the transfer case off and replaced the front seal, took it for a drive and it was dripping right away but not as bad. Soo I pulled it back into the shop and pulled it apart again and it had turned out that my parts dealer had given me the wrong seal, so I went and got the proper one and stuck it back in there and took it for another drive and it still leaked, but not as much. So once again I put it back into the shop, took it apart (not happy at this point) packed the seal with grease like a mechanic I talked to said to do and took it for a drive again today... It lasted a while longer without leaking but yet again, it is still dripping.
It's not leaking to the extent that it was but I'm starting to get really fed up with this leak and I need some suggestions/help.
Has anyone had a similar problem? Am I doing something wrong? Help?! =(

Message: Make sure that you have he correct seal for the t-case, clean up
the area around the seal very well, inspect the area around the seal
for any cracks or debris, and press the new seal in straight and
carefully, you dont have to pack it with any grease, just a light
coating of oil.

Message: Check the input shaft bearing and the shaft itself. If the shaft is worn or nicked the seal has nothing to seal against. If the bearing is worn the least little bit the shaft will move and cause the seal to leak.
