Subject: Some Info Needed IP: Logged
Message: I got a Dakota 93, LE, 4WD, Auto, 3.9L for my first truck at 16. Im stoked and it runs like a babe. The problem with being young is I dont know much about my truck, how it works, or how to fix stuff. I have 13-15MPG which seems like nothing. I haven't heard anything that doesn't sound funny. I know my gas gauge has some issues reading how much in the tank(explained in other post), but other than that the only think that might be worth mentioning is that after starting it, it sounds weird till I get it up to 25 then the sound goes away then i can go slower and it sounds fine.
Anyway to improve MPG?
Ps: I replaced the filter and had an oil change the day I got it.

Message: Also, I can't take an auto class next year because the class is getting the boot. The stupidist thing I've ever heard. There were 20+ kids in that class too.

Message: Chuck, the way to check for codes is, turn the key to the on position, not to start, only to "on". then turn it on and off 3 times (quickly) and leave it in the on position. Either the Check Engine light or the odometer will show the codes, the ck.eng. light will flash, or it will show a code number with a "P" in front of the code, then it will move to another code (if any) or will show Pdone.
Good luck and welcome to the world of Dakota's

Chuck, that is what it is supposed to do. You have to count the flashes like this: Flash, short pause Flash Flash= Code 12, 5 flashes, a short pause, 5 flashes= Code 55.
Try it again and psot back what you find.

Message: Heater in the oxygen sensor is not heating. You need a new oxygen sensor, the one closest to the motor. Its in the exhaust pipe.

Message: http://www.allpar.com/fix/codes/index.html for the procedure and code list for your vintage truck. You have no faults listed, your O2 sensor is not bad.
Depending on driving style, you got what you can get. I drive conservatively, and I get 20 mpg highway and 17 city; EPA ratings were 20/16, so I'm on track.
Do a full tuneup before anything - new spark plugs, wires, ignition rotor, cap, air and gas filter, PCV valve and clean the breather cap and throttle body.
