Subject: Gas Gauge Funny IP: Logged
Message: Ok. So 6 months ago I bought a Dodge Dakota 1993 3.9L V6 LE 4WD Auto. The first time I drove it I knew I would love it. It handles great, runs great, and sounds like a beast without even Flomasters. The ONLY downsides to it are that the water temp gauge doesn't work and that the gas gauge is acting funny. The gas gauge is what bothers me. When I fill it up it reads full, but once I drive more than 16 miles it shoots down to full. I was scared at first, but noticed that I could keep driving. Something is obviously wrong, but at the moment I am not sure what.
Any suggestions on what is wrong and how to fix it?

Message: It is the 'sender unit' in the tank .
Problem is that it is part of the fuel pump assembly and I do not believe that it is available separately .

Message: I have a 93 also and it did the same thing, except the gas guage didn't work at all. I replaced the fuel sending unit and it fixed it but it still acts weird like yours. I found the sending unit at a dodge dealer online. My suggestion is to just ignore it and use the tripometer like i do and you'll never have to worry about running out or gas.
For your water temp sensor, it's a $15 easy fix. It was the sending unit for mind and it took 15 minutes to replace. The water temp sending unit is located ontop of the enginge. You'll have to take the air cleaner box off and you'll see a wire that sticks up, and then goes down onto a sensor, then into the block. And on my 93 i had to replace both water sensors (dash and computer)so if i were you i'd do that now so you save yourself some trouble down the rode because it messed up everything for me. The sensor that goes to the computer is right next to the upper radiator hose, where it goes into the engine block.
