Subject: Knocking and pinging while cruising

Message:
The old thread to these issues wase getting stale and I wanted to consilidate and update issues with my 98' V6 Automatic Dakota with 170K miles.

The original link is here:
http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/v6/17001-1.html

Currently it is starting to knock and ping on the freeway; mostly on level surfaces after about 20 min of driving (@ about 2000 RPM's). When it does this, I notice smoke coming out of tail pipe.

So far performed the following:
1)Complete tune up including plugs, wires, cap/rotor, oil/filter, PVC, air filter.
2) Replaced fuel pump.
3) Replaced brake master cylynder and complete system (needed it anyways).
4) Replaced Throttle Position Sensor
5) Replaced Idle Air Control Valve
6)Cleaned an reconnected most visible under hood connectors and checked ground points.
7) Attempted reading any fault codes but none were registered by Mecahnic.

Any more ideas?

Deon

Has your oil consumption gone up? It sounds like a leaking Intake Manifold Plenum Gasket. With the engine off, look into the TB and open the throttle, if you see oil in there your plenum gskt is toast.

Thanks. Oil use is stable. Prior to this symptom, the truck was running really good for years. And still runs good when the knocking/pinging is not present. I will however look in to the TB for signs of oil.

As for engine rebuild, whhew.... that's a first.

Thanks,

Deon

EVEN WHEN TEMP GUAGE STAYS OR READS COOL, COULD BE A HEAD GASKET, THE WHOLE KEY HERE IS AFTER DRIVING A PERIOD OF TIME, COULD BE A HEAD GASKET, A HEAD GASKET WILL LEAK BETWEEN 2 CYLINDERS, THIS MIGHT BE THE SMOKE YOU SEE,ALSO CHECK RADIATOR .

Thanks for the input guys. At this point, I have it in the shop. We will see...
However, in response:
1) The O2 sensors: Are old.
2) Fuel pressure: Is good according to last check and stable. And have new fuel pump.
3) Head gasket: I suppose it's a thought. However, water the level is maintained fine.
4) Gas: Tried different stations and brands. Timing I beleive is electronic controlled. And just installed new cap and rotor assemblies.

Are O2 sensor problems a real possibility? I thought these would put out code when bad and I get NO codes. Also, would these or could these cause knocks and pings.

An afterthought, it does see that the problem ocurrs only when in gear but I need to double check this.

Thanks gain.

The shop just diagnosed the ECM (Computer) as the main culprit. They were able to replicate the problem in house by "fluxing" two pins and other diagnistics. I must say that if this indeed the problem, KUDOS to them!

Now, does anyone have any idea where to purchase a used ECM? They are on back order through the dealer until April/May timeframe.

By the way, the state of CA requires certain programming specs ofr the ECM once purchased...

Any ideas welcome.

Thanks,

Deon
