Oh Yes the 42 RE

The most common problem with these trans is the
presure sensor and sol very very common for these
to go bad

Get them from a dealer than drop the pan and replace
them the transmissions will do all sorts of crazy
things when they go bad

Replace both and a new filter while your in there
having the new ones in hand will make sure you
take the right ones out LOL save the gaskit they
do not come with one but they never break

I have replace so many of these its unreal I have
even gotton brand new ones that were bad but
chrysler knows of the prob and gave me another
set

It meses with the presure and its best to replace
them as soon as it starts acting up or you could
take out the trans

just take your time have a big pan and lots of
rags there is no drain and you need to remove
the pan while its full

fill it back just get into the safe mark than
take it for a good ride to warm it up than
top it off an over full trans will cause
foaming and it will run hot do not over fill

Larry, thanks for responding, in the meantime i took it to have a computer read the codes and this is what they gave me:p1757 manufacturer control transmisssion, p0748 pressure cont sol a circuit electrical. replaced the transduece pressure valve and the solenoid transmission. i did not replace the filter, after doing all this , low gears are shifting ok but then when it tries to go to 3rd or 4th it goes up to 2500 rpms and wont downshift to lower gear. The only thing i can think now as you said , clean the connectors and apply dielectric. the only way to do that is drop the tranny they have got the wires stretched so tight.Throttle sensor position valve, if electrical is notafter dropping tranny, cleaning connectors, replacing filter, where would the tps come into play?
Again america needs and loves great mechanics, and knowledge of a good truck running. I dont know if this truck is worth it. But its gonna have to last me another 5 or 10 years. God Bless you and take care. I await your response. Thanks

I've got a 2000 Dakota Sport that had what sounds like the same problem you're having when I got it last May. It ran fine, shifted but ran over 2000 rpm at 50 or so and wouldn't downshift. (You aren't going to believe this but I proved it to a few guys that it was the problem.) There was a transmision fuse in the engine compartment missing! Someone had taken a couple out including the brake light fuse, which is actually the reason I was poking around under the hood. The truck now has the power it should, throws gravel on take-off, and shifts down the way it should. All because of a fuse! You may have already checked this first, but I felt I should say something since none of the guys including my mechanic who I might add, is a very knowledgeable fellow, even considered a fuse. Hope this helps or at least gives you guys a good laugh that a woman can fix a transimission with a cheap fuse.
