Message: I have a 1988 dakota 5speed 3.9L. I just replaced the clutch in it and now it will not go into 4x4. when you shift it to 4 high or 4 low you can feel the transfer case locking in but the front drive shaft does not lock into 4x4 and the 4 wheel drive light does not come on its not going into 4x4

Message: Jay, I have an 88 as well, and the front axle uses a vacuum operated lock on the right drive shaft and a vacuum line from the engine to the small tank by the transfer case is used to engage the front axle. The front drive shaft should turn even though the axle isn't locked when you put the transfer case in 4 wheel drive, but since the axle isn't locked it won't do any good. So I would check all the vacuum lines from the engine to the tank to the front axle. The light to indicate the 4X4 is engaged should come on at that point when the front axle fully engages.
I hope that helps, good luck

Message: They quit using the vac setup in 92 it actualy
disenguages the left axle
All the older dodges had the vac setup most times
you can take them apart and free them up but
if there is a hole in the diaphram you will
need to replace it

Message: I think my teenage son drove my 1992 Dakota around on dry roads
in 4WD. Light does not come on in high or low and the truck won't
engage with the shifter in 4WD high or low. Which gear did he
shred? Or is it something else? Think a handy novice can fix this?
