 Subject: rough idle problem

I have a 1994 3.9 2x4 auto. When the truck is warmed up it has a rough idle. I have replaced the iac, tps, map, and one of the oxygen sensors( the other one was replaced right before I bought the truck).I have tried everything I can think of, please help.

Possible problem with EGR valve/solenoid .
Has it ever been replaced ?
Also , check the vacuum hoses around it and others connected to the intake .

if its the EGR a fault code would reveal it
dont just start throwing parts on
check for codes as stated above

I checked the codes when I got the truck and replaced the egr valve. I has checked codes and there were no recent codes in the system. I also had it to a mechanic who just scratched his head and tried to sell me his dodge.

I'd try these two things next. Try a complete tune up (plugs, wire, distributor cap, and rotor) and the pvc valve. If that helps but still a rough idle i'd try the ignition coil to. Also it you may want to try so fuel treatment that removes water from the tank. And you could also try cleaning you carberatour. I'm asuming that's what you have since i have a 93 with a carby. I did a complete tune up including plugs, wires, dist cap, rotor, ingnition coil, pcv valve, and the other oxygen sensor. I have fuel injection not a carb. I removed all of the injectors and cleaned them by hand. I also ran a can of Seafoam through the fuel system. The truck has a little better pick up but the idle still shakes,

Then i would try replacing the fuel filter, if you haven't already, to make sure that it's getting a good solid flow of fuel. Also try the next couple of times you fill up your gas some more injector cleaner. Have you gotten the fuel pump checked? That's the only other thing that i could think that would be the problem.

The entire fuel pump assembly was replaced within the last year with an oem from dodge. I tested the fuel pressure and it was better than spec. I will put another can of Seafoam in the tank and see if that helps.

Take a look at your spark plugs. The color and condition can tell you a lot. Post back here what you find. Also, do a compression test.

OK, I decided to replace my plugs with some better plugs. I ran compression on all cylinders and they were within oem spec. Idle is still a little rough.
I ran seafoam through the fuel system and took a one day road trip in it to clean it out, very little difference. I am nor thinking of replacing the injectors and fuel rails.they are 16 years old and have 194k in them. Do you huys think this would be a good idea?

take your dist cap off
hold rotor check for side to side play
then back an forth (rotation)
it's a notorious problem and you have more then enough miles to fit the bill

sorry it took so long to get back.
I checked the distributor and there was some play in it. I took the truck to a guy in Nebraska that specializes in mopar performance and had him rebuild to distributor( it was a lot cheaper than buying new). The difference in power was noticeable, but the idle was still shaky. The guy drilled out the air/fuel screw on the intake and readjusted the mixture and the timing. The shake went away and my power and fuel economy went up. Thanks for all of your help.

If I'm n ot mistaken, that is impossible to do on a '94. The PCM controls the timing and it is fuel injected?

You are correct
the PCM would only re'adjust everything.
Pbond there was no need for a rebuild.
A new drive gear and bushing (in the block)
Which I'm betting he never changed.

he did replace the drive gear and the bushing in the block. He showed me how to rebuild it so I can do it in the future. We just rebuilt the rear end last night and are going to replace the body bushings this weekend.
