Hey guys i have a 95 3.9 Dakota 2wd. I bought this truck 2 weeks ago it had been in a barn for about 3 years. I put i new fuel pump on it and got it running. I drove it a couple days and it died. Now i been trouble shooting. It has a new computer, new coil, new pick-up in the dist. and now new crank sensor. It will start up sometimes and run for a few then die. and sometimes it wont start at all. According to my neighbors diagnostic report its showing the crank sensor but we have tried a new one twice with no luck. What else could be causing this truck to do this??

Hey,

Try to turn it over on starting fluid, that will tell a lot. Get back with what happens!

blacknblue450 DO NOT USE starting fluid!

Now go under the hood, Drivers side inner fender well. You'll see a black fuse/relay box. Remove it carefully, Take the wire harness and untape it. You are then looking for a splice or wires it is 3 or 4 wires spliced together (most are red/white stripped)
Check the splice,Most likely it is cruded up or even broke. Cut the splice out and redo it. Retape the harness and of course reinstall fuse/relay box.

Curly is right on this one. That splice, I believe the factory labeled it #115 in the wiring diagram, is notorious for crudding up. If you can, I advise soldering it all up, then tape well.

Hey guys,

looks like it's time for me to learn something...

I've always used starting fluid in diagnosing an engine...then again untill now I've only ever worked with things pre 1980...

Why shouldn't you use starting fluid in a case like this?

One reason I can think of is, that stuff will remove any and all lubrication from the cylinder walls and your rings will then scrape bare metal with no protection. Not good. I'm sure there may be others.

A gas engine needs 3 things to fire, Air, fuel and spark. Check those first and go from there.

Well guys i checked all the wires runnin up to the relay box. they all look good. i unwrapped all of them and thye look like brand new wires and have a good solid connection. I had the truck runnin today for about 20 minutes. I drove it up and down the street till it died. Everything it runs it drains the battery. I feel like i have a short in a wire somewhere just not sure where else to start lookin??

Maybe you should try checking for codes and see what comes up. Also, can you tell why it dies? Loss of fuel, spark?

Another update. The reason the battery was gettin drained was due to bad starter. Replaced that.. I had the truck running again today. It idled in my driveway for 55 minutes before dying. The gas was drained and replaced with all new. It looses spark when it dies. I had a neighbor run a dignostic on it. Only thing it come up with was crank sensor showing no signal so i replaced that and it still continues to die. Im completely lost guys and with tires and parts i have spent near a grand tryin to get the truck back on the road. I would love to drive the truck everyday so i dont have to pay for diesel in my big truck so hopefully something gets figured out lol
