Hello, I've read a little here about the iat mod, the tps mod, and a couple others involving sensors. I was wondering if anyone could go over them in a little more detail.

I do have a little bit of electrical background, but fuel injection is new to me and there are more bloody sensors then I know what to do with...

Hi,

The mods are not worth the effort, it is probable that your truck will decrease in performance.

Leave well enough alone!

TPS mod

Have you ever noticed that slight stumble right off idle when you
mash the pedal to the floor? Here's an easy fix for the
sluggish response of the throttle (which is relatad to the TPS
Sensor)-

Check your TPS voltage before doing this modification as none of
the factory sensors are calibrated the same, We've seen
ranges rom .3v-.7v...from the factory. Connect a Digital Volt
Meter to the middle terminal on the TPS sensor( with the
harness connected and the Key-ON/Engine-OFF)
(1) Remove your TPS Sensor from the vehicle (Located on the
drivers side of the throttle body - 3-Wire Connector)
{2) Put tfie TPS into a vice and drill the two brass inserts out of
the casing with a 1/4' or 7/32" drill bit (drill from the back of
the sensor...not the front). You'll need to push on the drill as it
will only spin the inserts---once they're heated up enough,
they'll pop right out-
(3) Clean up the hole with either the drill or (preffered) a small
rourd file-
(4) Reinstall the TPS Sensor on the throttle body. You'll need two
small washers on the screws as the holes are now bigger
than the screw head. Leave it slightly loose as you're going to
have to set the initial Key ON/Engine OFF Voltage before
starting the engine.
(5) Reconnect the TPS sensor hamess and connect a Digital Volt
Meter to the middle of terminal on the TPS Sensor (you can
poke through the weather-proof connector).
(6) Tum the ignition key ON but do NOT start the engine
(7) Set the initial voltage (by turning it with your fingers on the
TPS at about ,7 volts. {Optimum range is from .7 - .75
voltr)
(8) Tighten down the TPS screws ard check the voltage one more
time (yes,it can move slightly when tightening it down)
(9) Start the engine but do NOT step on the accelerator pedal---
let the computer learn the new initial voltage setting.
(10) your throttle response should be much more precise
now.

A ported and polished TB is a must...and if you have any
mechanical skills you can port and and polish the TB yourself!!

good luck!!

NorthernDak,

Thanks that's exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for! I'm actually a watchmaker, so I have a full shop for building and repairing watches and clocks, porting and polishing a tb should be no problem.

I Know,

Don't be that guy....
I asked because I like to wrench on stuff... so enjoying an afternoon working on the truck and then seeing what the results are is worth it to me no matter what those results are...

Waltham eh?
they were some of the best made American watches, also they made a lot of them, which means tons spare parts!

There are a few things that could go wrong with the balance assembly, the staff could be broken, the wheel could be out of true, the hairspring could be deformed. All of these things are pretty common, I'm guessing that the staff is broken, a new one can be easily ordered or even turned out on a lathe.

pray tell, does the wheel with the little screws in it spin back and forth, or just wobble freely?

Back on topic...lol

I checked the voltage on the tps, it was .6 I'll do the mod today and let you all know how it turns out.

get back to me about that watch haha

WOW, never thought I would see such throttle response out of an old pickup... Any more fun mods?

This is my first Waltham pocket watch, I purchased it in non
working condition, I was told that the balance wheel needs
replacing. The watch is key wound, but doesnt wind, I slightly
move the key about 1/8" and thats all, with a pinch of force.
As for the wheel, I took a pencil and carefully wound it, it
somewhat winds up then springs back, and when I wind again, it
doesnt spring back. and yes the wheel wobbles.
These parts are just to small for my aging eyes....

Back to the TPS....its a bit delicate to set the correct voltage on
the TPS....almost a "fine turn" will increase and decrease the
voltage....a watchmakers touch!!
The voltage might vary as you tighten the screws on the TPS, so
re check the voltage once the screws are torqued.
.70 to .75 and you should notice a better throttle response.

I have a 92 with a V6, I ported and polished the TB and ran it for
2 years, I didnt really notice a difference. I read on
DODGEDAKOTAS.COM (a free plug)
that you can use the TBs from V8s, so I picked one up from the
junkyard, 25 bucks, I ported and polished the TB, I also had to
change the throttle cable for a V8 (also junkyard)
Once I installed the V8 TB, I reset the PCM, I noticed a difference
right off the bat, and the single exhaust system sounds so much
better...
It takes the PCM a few hundred miles to learn the increased
airflow.
I have a 5 speed, I could light up my tires starting in second!
Fuel mileage, i dont noticed any difference, I have a lead foot!!

Have you done the CPS and IAT sensor mods yet?
Make note when doing the CPS mod you need to go one range colder on the spark plugs.
