Subject: 1993 3.9L intermittent mis-fire IP: Logged
Message: 1993 3.9L, 90K miles. Cranks/runs fine until it mis-fires/back-fires losses power at ant speed. I have pressed accelerator to floor and when it rpm is above 3000rpm, it would regain timming and run fine. Now I have to stop and let engine idle, when it reached idle rpm it will lope low and either regain its timming or shut off. If it shuts off, it will restart and run fine until the next time which could be 2 minutes, 2 hours, or 2 days. I have replaced the distributor, timming chain, plugs/wires, coil, o2 sensor, crank sensor, and fuel filter from fuel tank. Please HELP...

Message: Said you replaced fuel filter no mention of fuel pump. So check fuel pressure and where it is a 93 check the under hood wire splice.

Message: I just got done fixing a similar annoying and hard to find problem on my '96 5.2. Before you check the aforementioned fuel pump and wire splice, try this- While your engine is idling in your driveway, wiggle the two wires that plug into the bottom of your coil. They may be broken, or not contacting properly with the prongs in the coil. If it is a problem with these wires or the connection, the truck will noticeably miss or shut off. It would not be a bad idea to have an inline spark testor connected to one of the cylinders while your doing this so that you can see whether it is in fact a faulty connection at the coil.
If it is not that, the next easiest thing would probably to chek the splice that "well" mentioned. The splice is under the power distrubution box (black plastic box with fuses and relays inside) on the driver's side fender. You will have to cut away all the tape to find it, but it's not that bad. I believe that it is two wires going into one. Good luck and keep us posted.

Not too expensive - should be under $ 75.00 ..

Besides, I doubt that mstaines227(The O.P.) is coming back to find an answer.

Message: I have a 92 3.9 which had an intermittent mis fire also. I put an aluminum "gasket" under the egr valve to see if that was the problem and it was. I was quoted $105.00 for an egr valve at my local NAPA store. I had another 92 a while back and the catalitic converter plugged at 120,000 plus. That acted like a bad fuel pump... took a lot of experimenting to get it figured out.
