Subject: coolant issues IP: Logged
Message: im encountering a weird problem. just put a thermostat in my 87 3.9 v6. when the engine warms up the heat gauge goes up to 3/4 then drops down to half where it stays. when i open up the hood ive got coolant everywhere. It appears to be coming out of the rad cap though it may also come out of the reservoir overflow valve. i seem to lose abou 1/4 inch out of the reservoir everytime i drive somewhere. I assume when the heat guage drops to half (normal operating temp) is when this happens, and is related to the thermostat opening. I would continue to run it without a thermostat but i need heat for the winter. any help would be greatly appreciated

Message: Try changing the radiator. If it is weak it will not hold the amount of pressure it is designed for.

Message: Changing the radiator is an extreme reaction to take just because you're leaking coolant. Autozone rents a coolant system pressure tester for a $75 deposit. Since the tool attaches where your radiator cap normally sits, if that is the problem, then the system should hold pressure during the test. If the problem is elsewhere then you will be able to see it leaking during the test. Hope that helps

Message: That should have been "radiator cap" in my post above. Sorry about that.

Message: Rad cap has been replaced. rated to 16 lbs of pressure. It seems just to leak only once during a drive. not sure why there is a rise in pressure before the thermostat opens but after there seems to be no leaking going on.

Message: Since this started after changing the stat, the problem is a bad t-stat.
The excess pressure has nowhere to go because the stat is closed so it goes back into the radiator through the lower hose and blows the rad cap.
