Message: The tire and rim combo for the 20s is 29.7", much too big for that drop. The tire will hit the top of the fender very hard and often. 28" is the max overall diameter at 255 series, though small rubbing with top of fender might occur. 28" at 275 will also hit hard. I'd recommend no larger than a 275/35/20 series tire. This has an overall diameter of 27.5", which might work well. The 275/30/20 series tire at 26.5" would work great and is the best bet. Nitto carries the 30 series for about $305+/-. Good Luck.

Message: the 275/45/20 is only 1.3" taller than a 255/35/20 from the center of the hub to the tiretread.
im running a 255/35/20 with a 4/6 drop with minor rubbing. the only reason you wouldnt be able to go with a 275/45/20 is because it will rubb while turing. try maby a 245/40/20 or a little higher.
try to fill the wheel well as much as possible or else it will look retarded with a big gap between the wheel well and tire
I feel sorry for the poor sap that buy's the 30 series nitto. thoes rims are history.

| Backspacing... IP: Logged
Message: Backspacing has alot to do with rubbing and hitting the top of the fenders. The R/T rims have 6" backspacing and mine have 4.5". This small difference has the tires slightly rubbing the top of the fender with my 255/55/17s. If I had the R/T spacing I would not be rubbing at all when dips in the road.
Eric,
The 255/35/20 is at 27.03" which is a hugh difference from the 29.7" 275/45/20. The 27" is way under the 28" I talked about and that is why you are not hitting. Your drop is 2" coils and 2" a-arms correct? If you had 3" or 4" coils even 27" tires would be too large and cause problems. Half an inch between the fender and tire can be the difference between hitting hard and not at all (from personal experience :0). The 245/45/20 might work only because the tire is not so wide. The overall diameter is at 28.6" and with 6" backspacing (not 4.5 which might cause problems)this should work fine. Oh YA, 30 series tires will cause the rims to die quick.

Message: the overall diamiter is 2.4" taller than my 35 series, but you have to remember only 1/2 of that is above the hub. to its only 1.2" taller than mine. with his truck 2" taller than mine he should have no problem.
you are right about the backspacing. my rims are 8" wide with 6 1/4" of backspacing. if they were 9" wide with 7 1/4" of BS I probably would not be able to turn.
with only 4.5" of BS do you have to run the R/T fender flares?
Eric
PS do you know when cal speedway reopens?

Message: The 2" taller is not 2" more inches in regards to clearance. You and him probably have the same clearance distance or distance from hub to the top of the fender. The difference is that you are 2" closer to the ground because of your lower a-arms. If you had used 4" drop coils, you would be correct with him being 2" higher and having more room for a bigger diameter tire. If he was to use 2" a-arms, instead of 2" coils, his stock clearance distance would be unchanged. Lowered a-arms only get the frame you closer to the ground. This explaination only works if his kit uses 2" coils which most do.
Yes, I have the fender flares. My tires and fenders line up perfect, unlike the R/Ts. The R/Ts rim and tire combo are in more than mine by a small amount. Most do not notice the difference, unless my truck and my buddies R/T are side by side. Even then, one has to look close to see the difference.
Fontana reopens on January 12 & 13, but I will not be attending this date. Instead, I will attend the January 26 & 27 with a few buddies of mine. You coming??? ;)

Message: um yes the A-arms do bring you closer to the ground. how can the frame come closer to the ground with out the rest of the truck folowing it? the A-arm has a deeper pocket so the spring will sink down more. just like if you cut 2" off of the spring, only you get a better ride because you dont have to cut the spring or use a shorter one.
thats why they call it a 4/6 drop as opposed to a 2/4 drop. do you know how pissed i (and others) would be if i payed to have my truck and it only lowered it 2"?
also i had to notch my frame so the rear axle would not hit. this is not required on a 2/4 drop, because its not low enough.
Eric
i have to see if i can get off work. sounds fun

Message: What I mean is that the travel distance of the coil does not get shorter. Yes, the body does come down with the frame. Think of it as drop spindles, they drop the truck without changing the travel distance of the coil. Drop spindles do not fill in the wheel well but coils do give that appearance. Lowered a-arms are a different way of achieving the same thing as a drop spindle. I'll check with my local custom shop tomorrow about the a-arms. I hope I do not have this all backwards, especially since I took a suspension and alignment class recently. Someday when my truck is not my daily driver, I want to put the 2" a-arms and drop the rear (C-notch time) an additional 2"!
Yup, nothing better than spanking s-10s, rangers, tacomas! I'll have to tag you in to spank the Silverados, F-150s and other v8ers.

Message: i know that using a stock spring and a lowered A-arm will have the same suspencion travel as stock, but since the gap between the fender and tire is 2" smaller the tire will hit the fender if the side wall of the tire is tall enough.
usually the new A-arms come with bumpstops that prevent contact from the tire and wheel well though.

Message: Hi All-
I see this is an older post but I figured I would give it a shot. I've got an 03 Dak Quad / Sport.
The suspension on the sports seem to be higher than the STX or SLT. Here's my plan. I bought R/T coils from Dodge to lower my front 1" and angled 2" blocks in the rear. Right now I am running 275/60/17's and I wasn't sure if I upgrade to 20" rims what size tire I should go with? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Message: its not about rim size its about overall tire size. on a 2/4 drop liek a hotckis, like i have on mine. you can go 30" in the rear and no more then 27" in the front. i have a 18/20 combo. with 255/45/18 up front and 265/45/20 on the rear. no rubbing problems. i had 0s on all 4 conners with 275/45/20. 29" overall. they rubbed heavily on the front.
