my trany went out what is the big thing that goes out in an a500. the truck has no gears not even park(it rolls in all gears) in gear it revs up to 2000 and wants to move but does not. the past week befor it went you would let off the gas and brake and you could some times get it to clunck but it went like a bat out of hell.
1992 dodge dakota 2wheel drive v6 a500
changed trany oil 5000 miles ago was in the shop over the summer to well i was at basic

when it went out i was halling but then i let off and hit the brakes let off them and then i went over a bump and all it did was clunck and it was gone when i looked in the pan on the magnet there was alot of black muck im guessing that it is metal

Hi there. Well the vehicle may not have park or any move-able gears then problem might not be the transmission. Put your transmission in neutral and apply the parking brake, if you can physically turn the driveshaft then you have a problem in the differential.
possible cause of your problem.
Strip'd splines on the output shaft going to the slip yoke .
a snap'd axle
Carrier,ring and pinion damage.
try this as well.put the transmission in drive and see if the speedometer moves up, if so forget about the tranny.

check your linkage to be sure its operating
losing all gears and finding all the black gue
tells me the presure valve is stuck shut this
means the first thing to do is remove disasemble
and clean the valve body than give it a try
the valve body is the brains and tells the trans
what to do if the presure valve is stuck it will
do absolutly nothing in any gear but park should
still work that is a pin that locks into like a
detent to lock the output shaft

yeah cleaning the valve body did not work i was talking to a guy that my dad worked with and he said that there is a bearing in the trany that goes out that will cause the trany to drop every gear. but thanks for the helping hand

It's called a throw out bearing
and is only found in manual transmissions
