Subject: bent valve? IP: Logged
Message: I bought a 97 dakota v6 recently. When i got the truck it had a missfire on cylinder 2. I replaced all the ignition parts and also changed the chain because it had tons of slack and was original. Anyways, after doing all that i was still getting a misfire. After checking for spark and fuel i did a compression test, came out around 70 psi. Obviosly something is wrong there. I can hear a slight ticking comeing from the cylinder. I was wondering if its possible for there to be enough slack in a timing chain for one of the valves to tap a piston. When i took the chain if it still have the right timing and didnt skip teath or anything, just had a bunch of slack. I didnt do a wet test yet but the truck only has 80k, i really dont think its the rings. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

Message: Is the ticking coming from the valvetrain or sounds like inside the cylinder itself? I doubt it's a bent valve. I would pull the valve cover off that side and see what's going on in there.

Message: Yeah i wet tested it and the compression came back only slightly higher. I did a leakdown test and narrowed it down to the intake valve. Right now im in the middle of taking the head off and got stuck with a stripped manifold nut. Any ideas?

Message: Well it turns out my valve was messed up but the reasoning behind it was the bridge between the intake and exhaust valve had a crack in it. Either way i got a remaned head and was getting ready to put it on last night and came across a new problem. While scraping off the old head gasket i noticed 2 small cracks in the block. There both on opposite sides off one of the head bolt threads. They go from the threads over to the coolant passages on both sides. Not sure if this is really gonna effect the truck once its together or not.

Message: Fortunatly i dont think the cracks are gonna be a problem. My friends uncle is an engine builder and he said its not that uncommon and where the cracks are shouldnt be a problem.
