Subject: Oil pan r&r IP: Logged
Message: i have a 97 dakota with the 3.9. its 4 wheel drive. i was looking at the procedures to do the timing chain on alldata and it says to drop the oil pan because the seal is ruined when you remove the timing cover. my question was on alldata it says to drop the front axle to remove the oil pan. is this entirely neccesary or is their a way to sneek by or maybe drop it then reach in and remove the pick up tube and screen?...i was just wonderin if any one else has done this and i would appreciate any imformation.
thanks

Message: Mario. I have (on My 99)changed my timming chain and taken off the timing cover many times to check Etc. I personally bought a pan gasket off e-bay it was for a 94 but guess what its the same for a 3.9 up to 01 or 02. then I just cut off the front gasket part and silicone (a lot)it on the front of the oil pan, did loosen tne front pan screws to tuck it under somewhat has worked great so far, hope this wlll work for you. Message: thanks for the info and i will consider that.. if i can do the whole thing without dropping the axel i will but if not..then looks like im either dropping it or cheating but i just dont want it to leak..thanks again for the idea, ill keep it in mind.
