I recently purchased a used 2002 dodge dakota clubcab with a 3.9L V6 with around 43k miles. It has been getting really low gas mileage for what it should be getting. Around 11 MPG in the last 3 full tanks. I dont drive with a lead foot so i know its not that. I havent had any codes thrown at me so im kinda clueless on what it could be.

4x2 or 4x4? what is the state of tune? How about tire size, inflation and alignment? 11mpg highway, city or combined?

Its 2wd. Everything is stock and the tires are inflated to about 35 psi. And that 11mpg is all city.

Hi Tyler
as daddio asked is it 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive?
and also automatic or standard?
& hate to say it but the weight of the truck with a V6 you will not get the mileage you expect with a V6

Again I ask "what is the state of tune?" 2wd CC 3.9 auto should do better than 11 in town.

Im not sure i know what you mean when you say state of tune. I just bought this truck used so i have no clue whether the spark plus, rotor, dist cap, and whatnot have been replaced recently.

Exactly, start with a basic tune up and go from there. If you hadn't checked they may still have the original air filter. I've seen worse.

spark plugs, rotor, dist cap, wires air filter. Then see where you mileage goes.

43,000? not uncommon for some idiot not to change an air filter. my girlfriends moms expedition needed a filter change and she gained 3 mpg out of it...there was an entire bird stuck in it and it was completly clogged. it looked kinda like the inside of a vaccume filter...lol but try a basic tune...and even if it doesnt help to much then you at least know your truck has good ingnition components.

check your o2 sensors...sometimes things will fail but still be within operating peramiters....
if an o2 puts out between0.2 volts and2.0 volts yours could be putting out 1.9 causing it to run like crap but not throw a code...i made these numbers up but hopefully you get what im saying..let us know what you get after the tune.

The spark plugs are your window to how its running

they need to be a light tan sandy color or
something is wrong usualy o2 sensor but could
also be fuel pressure

these are the 2 most common probs that occure

It does not matter that it has low miles these
things can still be off

One other thing that happens in your year is a p;uged
or partialy pluged cat converter
