 Subject: 96 cruise control intermittent

I have a 96 Dakota Ext. cab 4x4, v-6. The cruise control is intermittent. It usually doesn't work but when it does, i can't get it to turn off w/out hitting the brakes, then the green light is on all the time till i shut off the truck. When it does work i have to some times push 2 buttons just to get one button to work. So i was thinking it was the controller and the buttons were shot or something, but about a month ago i changed the heater core and the cruise worked like a champ for 3 weeks. It turned on and off on command, and now it's back to usually not working
