Message: I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota with the Slip-Action Differiential on the rear axle. I took my truck into the Dodge Dealership for an annoying sound coming from my rear axle. The dealership told me the Rain gear and pinons have failed and they would need to rebuild the entire sides and re-pack the bearings. Total cost is expected to be around $1,850.00!
Can I just get the fluid re-filled for this repair and still operate the vehicle without the use of the slip-action differiential?

Message: No - failed 'parts' are needed either way.
Cheaper solution may be to get a used 'centerpiece' ..
