Subject: Fuel Mileage/Very Rough Idle IP: Logged
Message: Quick question for those of you that are in the know. I have an '02 Dodge Dakota 3/9.The gas mileage has dropped of somewhere in the rabge of at least 80-100 miles per tank.Autozone (yea,I know) says it may be injectors,it make be 02 sensors..blah..blah...blah..
I thought it was water in the gas,but af.ter several bottles of Heet,B12,& Seafoam...it still runs very, very rough.
I need some suggestions ...Also,what sensor is on the throttle body,(drivers side) it seems to run better if I unplug it.
Thanks
Woody

Message: The sensor you are referring to is the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). Don't think that sensor would cause the problems you describe

Message: Woody, have you checked the codes yourself? very easy to do. Turn the key on/off/on/off/on and the codes will display in the odometer. Then post back here. It could be any number of things.

Message: Probable oxygen sensors - I think on yours there are two before the cat .
How old are the spark plugs ?
Also the crankcase ventilation valve - valve cover
passenger side ..

Message: I replaced the spark plugs 2-3 weeks ago,I replaced them with just the cheap Autolite plugs.I didnt want to spend a lot if they were gonna be fouled out again in a few days.
Actually,as of 2 days ago,the truck is running a lot better, (knock on wood) no more backfiring, popping, stumbling etc.,the fuel mileage still isnt where it should be though.
I havent pulled the codes yet,I will pull them Saturday & post them on here afterwards.
Thanks Again
Woody

Message: Let me know if you find anything on this, mine is doing the same thing and running very rich and very rough idle. It has been sitting in my garage for 6 months because of this and I haven't really tried to fix it since I have other cars. I'm curious as to what codes you pull.

Message: Scott if your truck is up in the years and/or high miles, Most likely O2.
They can become slow/lazy to adjust long before they trip a code.
The EGR valve could cause some of these problems too and in most cases would also make the engine ping. However it would depend on the year as to if your truck has an EGR valve or not.

Message: Before screwing with replacement sensors and emissions controls, finish the semi-tuneup and install a new dist cap with brass inserts, new wires and new ignition rotor. I bet that does it.

Message: Thanks for the replies.I know a little, not a lot,& yes Im aware that my truck has no EGR valve.
Update, the last 2-3 days or so,the trucks been running a lot better,no more backfiring taking off & sporadically while driving down the road,& no more rough idling (shaking, vibrating) while sitting in traffic.I will finish the tune up this weekend.I have around 125,000 miles, not sure exactly,Ive been watching the trip meter & the fuel mileage lately.
Thanks For All of the Replies
