Subject: 4 cylinder to v6 swap IP: Logged
Message: i recently totaled my 97 extended cab v6 automatic two wheel drive dakota. everything is still good in this truck but the body. so i went and found another body to put the motor and transmission in but this truck used to be a 4 cylinder 5 speed and a single cab an i dont know if its the same year as my old dakota. my question is how difficult is it to swap the 4 cylinder out for the 6 cyinder and what other problems could i run into if any at all?

Message: Hi,
I recently took out a 4cyl stick and put in a v6 auto. It was a lot of work.
You need to replace the steering column plus the whole wire harness. The one under the dash (connected to the column) and the firewall. The engine harness computer etc under the hood needs to be swapped too. The instrument cluster needs to be swapped
The throttle cables are different and need to be swapped.
You will need the shift cable off the automatic transmission. You will need the mounting bracket for it under the dash. I don't remember if this was part of the steering column or dash.
The engine mounts are the same the trans crossover and drive shaft are not.
You will need a good radiator for the automatic. The 4cyl uses an electric fan so all that goes away. The v6 has a clutch fan.
That should be it.

Message: Let me get this straight. You "blew" the transmission in a stock Dakota 2.5L 4 banger? Now you say the biggest difficulty you're having is finding another 5 speed to go in a Dakota? Is that it?

Message: I never write on these things. But I need some
help! I've had this old 95 dakota for almost 2
years, and it's ran great. Its a single cab,
shortbed, that had a 4 cylinder. The guy I bought
it from swapped it to a v6. He also changed the
fuel pump by cutting a hole in the bed so he
prolly didn't dump the old gas. I think the
sock/strainer on the pump is clogging up, because
it recently start sputtering/lagging out. I
replaced the fuel filter, which is still under my
cab (like a 4 banger should be) but it has a v6
now, and the filter on a v6 is "in the tank".
Could the fuel filter placement be the issue with
my sputtering? Or should I replace fuel pump sock/
strainer thing? (It also still has 10 gallon tank
from 4 banger)
