Subject: trans pan bolts torque? IP: Logged
Message: I already stripped 2 bolts on my last transmissions oil pan, had to buy and install new tranny because the case cracked. I don't want to do it again, however I torqued the new pan bolts to 120in-lb as recommended by the filter instructions and it leaks slightly. It was done in a criss-cross pattern, once to 80in-lb, then to 120in-lb. Haynes manual says 156in-lb, but afraid to try it. What is the torque spec? Anyone?

Message: My chilton man has no tranny info. That sucks !!!
But lets look at the problem
I try to torque in a circular pattern from the center out in the direction towards the largest remaining pan side. Thats if you dont know or can find a torque sequence.
Check all threaded orfices make sure there is no dirt or anything elses in there that will cause the fasteners to bottom out and give bad torque reading.
Buy new fasteners as they are made from cheap material and they stretch. lubricate the fastener with some moly powder.
When final torque is achieved on all fasteners recheck in the same sequence atleast once more.
Do not try to use a torque wrnch that is too big or too small the minimums and maximums of a torque wrench are not always accurate, and always use a calibrated wrench.
Watch out for dried up locktite in the threads!!!
