Subject: heater, please help IP: Logged
Message: 2002 dakota
Having a problem with my heat/cold setting in my truck. I turn the knob a little towards the red so the ac isn't so cold and it literally goes from cold to warm, there's nothing in between. It's pumping out heat before the knob is even anywhere near the red. So i tried the heat by turning it all the way hot and it's definately hot. But when i turn it gradually back into the cold it's still all hot air. Can't seem to get it cooler unless i turn it completely cold and then click by click into the red till it's where i want it. But even then 5-10 minutes later it's like it moved and it's either too cold or too hot. I replaced the heater control assembly unit, the servo at the heater door seems to work fine. I took it off and watched it turn click by click as i turned the knob. I did notice though that after the knob was turned all the way it continued to run for at least another 15-20 seconds and i tried turning the knob in opposite direction to reverse the servo motor and it wouldn't reverse till it finished out it's cycle, should it do that? shouldn't it alter forward/reverse as soon as you turn either way on the control knob? I also manually turned the door by hand and it moves freely and not hanging up anywhere. would replacing the servo really do anything? Its very annoying, especially in the winter time trying to get a comfortable temp, had the problem last year as well just never took care of it. any help would be great. thanks

Message: the doors are operated by little vac pots
posible hole in vac pot or a cracked or pinched
vac line check for that
or it is the varible resistor control switch

Message: the heater door has a shaft on it that comes out and meets with the servo. i can manually turn the door by hand so i don't think there is vacuum involved.
i've also replaced the whole heater control unit, it has 3 knobs on it. that's what i thought, maybe the switch itself but i swapped it out, got it on ebay though. guess it's possible same thing could be wrong with that one too but i doubt it unless it's a common mopar problem.
only thing left to replace is the servo motor itself but it's seems to function fine.

Message: also, i have no #1 fan speed, 2,3,4 all work fine. the heater control i swapped is the same way so it must be in the truck somewhere. this is a seperate issue aside from the hot/cold thing. was told there is a resistor pack that controls ALL fan speeds and it was down near the firewall underdash on pass. side. there is nothing there. and also, how could only one fan speed not work and all the rest do if it's one resistor pack that controls all speeds? I would really like my #1 speed back, sometimes 2 is too much. this happened about 2 years after i bought the truck and dealer fixed it under warranty and did not replace the heater control assembly.
if i could get these two problems fixed before winter that would be awesome. anyone have ideas/thoughts?
