Hello everyone . I have a 92 dakota 3.9 4wd. I am having problems when I start my truck after it has sat for several hours .
The symptoms are ..... When it first starts in the morning or after it has sat for many hours ...it barely idles ...it coughs and back fires ...and it sounds like air is being pushed out throu the carb or whatever its called (under the air cleaner ) since its EFI. It does this until it gets about an 1/8 inch past the bottom line on the temp gauge. Then it seems to clear its throat and runs basically fine .

I have replaced a slew of parts on this truck .

Catalytic converter
Muffler
Battery
EGR
TPS
IAC
Crank sensor
igniotion coil
Indexed distributor
Cap rotor pick up coil
Plugs / wires
Oil sensor
Have checked for the notorious splice prob ( didnt see anything strange)
Had the sensors checked everything seemed fine
Truck isn't throwing codes except for 12 - 55
Can't seem to find any vaccum leaks and fixed the ones I did find .

To me it seems like something isn't opening upon cold start and creating the rough idle / backfire and the relase of air throu the "carb".

I was suspect of timing ...however it clears itself and then runs fine with zero hestitations or loss of power / no backfiring .

I am really at my wits end with this . I absolutely must get this truck running in an effort to work and feed my family .

any help thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated .Thanks so much .

It could be the engine temp sensor. I'm not sure if a '92 has one or two. My '00 has two. One is for the gage and the other is for the PCM. If yours has two, I'm thinking it's the one for the PCM. It helps the PCM, with a few other parameters, to determine fuel delivery in "closed loop", before the engine is up to operating temp.

Might I suggest you purchase a Haynes or Chiltons repair manual? They are only about 20 bucks at the local parts house. And yes, it could be going bad and not trip a code. Those OBD PCM's aren't that smart. The manual may even tell you ow to check the engine temp sensor.

Hrmm my last post didnt post...anyways I went and got the sensor ...went to replace it ...ended up pullin the temperature switch accidentally and it fell to pieces as i was pulling it . Had to go buy another part .lol Makes me wonder if that's any indication of the condition of the sensor . Now it's too dark out to work on it and no lights. Will change them both in the morn and see if that helps . Thanks guys wil update tommorow.

Ok I put a new coolant temperature sensor on ..only cost 12$ ...no effect. I did pick up a chiltons . It still idles extremely rough ...coughing spitting backfiring. Once again air was discharging from under the air cleaner . Warmed up for 5-10 mins and ran fine . there was also an overwhelming odor of gas / exhaust until it ran smooth .(which typically occurs). Any other clues or suggestions guys? I so need to fix this truck . Thanks again for your help .

Could a bad ignition switch cause these problems?

IAT incoming air temp sensor #2 runner intake

engine temp sensor A/C side by water neck thermo
housing 2 wires the alt side is guage sender

fuel preasure

bad coil

Try this turn key on for a few seconds than off
just on not to start do this 3 times every time
you do this the fuel pump will run for about 2
or 3 seconds if you have a weak pump or pluged
filter this will raise the pressure than crank
it and start

when it does run like crap let it run for a min
now pull a plug

if wet its electrical
if dry fuel problem

this will give you a good indication of what is
going on

also clean all grounds and connections radio
schack contact cleaner than let dry or blow with
air dry and reconect sometimes a bad connection
will be bad untill some heat is applyed than
parts expand and make a good connection

just a good way to start on these computer vehicles
the power plus side is always on and the ground
side is switched on and off

also check the ASD relay just change it out with
like the a/c relay remember which you switched
all the 30 amp relays are the same or buy 1 new
one first swap ASD if dont fix than switch fuel
relay
