Subject: Transmission/Transfer Case Issues IP: Logged
Message: I've recently purchased a 1993 Dakota Sport 4x4, V6 with a 5spd and it's making some noise from either the transmission or the transfer case. I'm not really that familiar with the 4x4 system thats on the truck so I'm looking for some information related to what's there... or what's supposed to be there.
The transmission will engage all forward gears and reverse and does not pop out of any gear. 2WH, 4WH and 4WL all work. However, in all gears and transfer case choices, there's noise/vibration under hard acceleration. Also, even in 2WH it seems as if the passenger front tire is dragging at slow speeds when turning.
Can anyone help our point me to a resource explaining the type of 4x4 components that should be on the truck?

Message: Make sure all lube points have been serviced. Also, check fluid in the transfer case. It's ATF and should be at the bottom of the filler plug. It's common for these to develop a seal leak at the front driveshaft.

Message: I had my father take the truck in to get the trans checked out... the trans shop said the bellhousing was a bit loose and they tightened it down but the noise remains. Since they don't know what's wrong with it, they would have to remove it and inspect it which they quoted at ~$1200 to repair the trans. Since I don't want to spend that kind of money, I'd rather just roll the dice with a trans from the junkyard as they can be usually found for ~$100.
Thus, what type of trans would the truck have and what other year trucks share the same trans? I think the transmission is the AX15 but I'm not positive.

Message: My father had already checked all the fluids and topped everything off. Everything up front (diff, trans and transfer case) was a bit low and the rear diff was perfect.
I haven't really driven the truck that much as it's currently in PA and I'm in MD but I hope to bring it down here in the next few weeks.
There is a 2nd Gen Dakota in the local (PA) yard and the trans was still in it last time I was there. I'm having my brother verify that it's the same and then I'll probably pick it up.
One thing I'm confused about though is the external slave cylinder. My truck has one, but I thought I read somewhere that they weren't on Dakotas in 1993.
I'm the 3rd owner of the truck and I dont think the previous owners did anything with it except drive it. For example, the original spare was still on the truck and it's never been used.
In the past few weeks I've gone through the truck and gave it a tune up, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, oil, air & oil filter, replaced the exhaust, 4 new tires and also had a new windshield installed.

Message: Alrighty... So I replaced both front C/V axles with new units from a local auto retailer to pass inspection and the clamps on the outer boots on both have come off after about 100 miles.
Also, since I've been spending a lot of time under the truck I've noticed that the transfer case is rubbing the underside of the cab. I'm not sure what's causing this but I'm guessing that something somewhere is out of alignment. The motor mounts appear to be good and while the trans mounts are a bit dry-rotted, they are also okay.
Can anyone tell me how much distance should be between the top of the transfer case and the underside of the cab if things are lined up correctly?
Lastly, I would like to replace a lot of the bushings on the truck as most are fairly worn out. From looking around I've found that Prothane makes a poly bushing kit for the 2wd trucks but not for the 4wd versions. If I bought a 2wd kit, would there be a lot of bushings that are wasted? Is there another company out there that makes a good bushing kit for the 4wd truck?
