Subject: Engine swap and roughness IP: Logged
Message: So, I just had an engine swap done to my 2000 Dak 4x4 regular
cab.
When I had my old engine torn out, the compression leak was so
bad that you could practically see the cab shake from the
outside when I was idling. Now, with the new motor, things are
much smoother.
I still feel a bit of roughness in the steering wheel and some
vibration if lean my leg against the drivers side door when
sitting in the truck. This is all at idle. Is it common for the V6
Magnum engine to be a little rough around the edges? Or
should I have my shop look at it again?
Unfortunately I dont know anyone with the same Dak to make
the comparison....

Message: You know....I just had my engine rebuilt, and I'm having the same issue almost. This is by no means trying to hijack the original posters thread....but to add to it.
The only way I can describe my problem is that the engine seems to have a "warp" in it of some sort. Runs smooth and fine at idle , very little vibration, and then the engine will all of a sudden "shift" .......then run fine for 20 seconds or so....the "shift" again....rinse, repeat.
And adding to the second posters question about new/old engine mounts...I'm 99.9% sure he used new engine mounts. I can see them. Freshly painted black. So , I'm stuck like the original poster too...
Now, going down the road is just fine, doesn't feel warped, or anything weird. Quite smooth actually. Just weird really.

Message: Forseti: I am not sure if they used new mounts or not. I am going
to have to ask.
MikeB: I hear you! The truck runs great when driving. I just feel
the vibrations a bit through the wheel and door panel. It seems to
go away after it is warmed up, or at least lessens in severity.
No codes being tossed, so it cant be a compression thing (like my
original motor) but it is still worrisome as I dont want to have to put
this sucker under the knife again.

Message: Hey guys,
I was looking for information on my 2002 Dodge Dakota and ran across this sight and saw your topic and thought I would tell ya what I went through on the rough idling.
I bought my 2002 Dakota magnum 3.9 liter brand new and it had a rough idle that didn't seem right so I took it back to dealership and they told me that it just had to settle out thru the first 3,000 miles. After it didn't after 3,000 miles I took it back and was told the transmission (this was from a woman service advisor) had to get thru the first 5,000 miles and it would settle out. After 5,000 miles I took it back pissed as hell and that service advisor saw how bad it was rough idling and said there definitely was something wrong and he took it back to a mechanic and he put it on a diagnostic machine and nothing came up and he told me that those year models and a few before ran like that because of the cam that was used in them and in 2003 they went to a different cam to get away from it. I said you mean to tell me that I can get in another 2002 out on your lot and it will have a rough idle? He said yes but they didn't have anymore 2002's on the lot anymore, just 2003's. I told him what the first 2 service advisors had told me before and told him if I had know I was going to have to live with it, I might not have bought the damn thing and I turned around and walked off and never went back to that dealership. It just didn't seem right that a brand new vehicle would idle that rough.
Don't get me wrong, almost 200,000 miles later I still love the truck and wouldn't trade it for anything. No problems have come out of the rough idling and I learned to deal with it. I just had to prove a point to the dealership.
Hope this helps ya'll out.

While it isnt "good" to hear that this is common, one cant help
but at least feel relieved. I mean, I can feel the idle through the
door panel, and the side mirror vibrates a little bit from it. I also
feel it in the steering wheel. When I watch the engine bay,
everything seems to be pretty solid. Guess this motor just sucks
in general, haha.
I know it isnt the same problem I ahd before because with my
old engine, the roughness would settle down a bit once the
engine was worm. THe engine would heat up, and the cylinder
would hold compression a bit better than when cold. With this
engine, it is the same ALL THE TIME.
Awesome. I kinda wis I bought a Tacoma.
