Subject: Question on hesitation IP: Logged
Message: All: When I start my 02 CC V6 with 69K miles it will hesitate/stumble when I throw the auto into gear. Seems like it wants to stall until I give her gas and she recovers. I recently changed the plugs, wires and cap. No codes. I thought maybe IAC but I never get fluctuations in RPMs. Could this be the TPS? Your comments are appreciated. Thx>>>AJ

Message: I've got two questions for you.
1) Does it only do this in the mornings on the first start of the day?
2) Do you still have the original battery in there?

Message: Daddio: No not only in the morning when its cold, throughout the day as well. I replaced the original battery last year with a new 72 month battery.

Message: Check the fuel pressure after it sets for a while and make sure it's within factory specs.
It may be leaking down enough to cause those symptoms but not enough to make it have longer starting time.

Message: Daddio: Good recommendation. Tell me what symptoms the TPS will cause if it goes bad. Thx again>>>AJ

Message: Usually a bad TPS will cause what you're experiencing, stumble and hesitation. If you have a DVOM you can chekc the TPS really easily.
Set the meter on VDC low range. Key on, engine NOT running. Back probe the center wire with the positive probe and ground the negative. With the throttle closed, at idle position you should read between 0.38 to 0.7 vdc. Remember this exact reading, you'll need it later. Now open the throttle all the way and it should read between 3.8 to 5vdc. Now release the throttle and let it come back to the closed/ idle position. You should now have the exact reading as the first. If not, your TPS is worn.

Message: Your TPS should be a little over 4 at full throttle and be around .71 at idle. I had to preform a TPS sensor mod to achieve this. The .71 will give you the best throttle response when coming off-idle.
