Subject: Spark Plug heat shield
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1999 3.9L v6 Dak and I want to replace the spark plugs. The problem is, I don't know how to remove those metal shields around the plugs that are installed now.

Any help would be appriciated.

Thanks,
Olindo

Hi,
You can just grab them with vise-grips and yank pull and twist like he@@ and they will come out as they are only pushed in.
I took 2 out and gave up though. I just put in spark-plugs with shield on your socket will fit in the tube. Don't forget to (index) the spark-plugs also.
Hope this helps.

If you don't live in the rust belt you should be able to get them out pretty easily. I removed mine a few years ago with a pair of Channel Lock pliers. All 6 came right out.

If your worried about them being rusted in try spraying a little PB blaster or penetrant of choice(rememeber WD is not a penetrant) around the outside of them where they fit into the head and let it sit for a while.

You can change them without removal though. A spark plug socket and 6 inch extension ought to do it.

Ha...never really though about trying to remove the plugs without removing the shield. I'll give it a go.

Thanks Daddio.
