Subject: Bad fan clutch?
IP: Logged

Message:
I've noticed that my AC doesn't blow cold at idle (sometimes it's even warm) and the temp gauge goes up above 210. While moving, the AC gets cold enough to freeze you out and the temp stays below 210. How hard should it be to turn the fan when the engine is hot? I've been told there should be some resistance. I can turn mine with one finger. It won't freewheel, but it is very easy to turn.
'98 Sport, 3.9, no auxilliary AC fan.

Thanks

Heavy, from what you describe it could be on it's way out. If you grab the fan blade(engine OFF of course), does it have any play in it if you move it side to side? If it does then for sure, change the clutch.

Is the rest of the cooling system up to snuff?
Fresh coolant? Good radiator cap? No leaks?

Hey daddio,
No side to side play, it just seems to me I shouldn't be able to turn the fan with one finger when the engine is hot. Rad cap and coolant are ok. No leaks. I was in line at the drive thru at the bank earlier, A/C was not on, and I thought I was going to overheat.

If it turns that easy that is most likely the problem. You could eliminate that mechanical fan all together. On '00 and up they came with the mechanical fan and a factory electric fan. you could easily install the electric and buy a temp switch to turn it off and on for about another 20 bucks.

I've been running my '00 QC 3.9 5spd without that mechanical fan for a little over 5 yrs and it has never once even tried to overheat.

But try a new clutch and see what it does. Maybe clean the A/C condenser and radiator. You'd be surprised what kind of crap can accumulate in those fins.

It was the fan clutch. Put in a new one and everything's good. I get that rushing noise that seems to irritate a lot of people (probably because I put in a heavy duty clutch), but I can put up with it knowing my truck is running cooler and the AC isn't going to crap out on me when I'm at a stop light.

Mine fan clutch is also shot. fan move all over the place. How hard are they to replace? Do you need any special tools? It looks straight forward enough.

Mead,
There are special wrench sets for this. One is a very long open end and the other is made for holding the water pump still so it doesn't turn while you're trying to loosen the nut on the fan clutch. Rather than buy a set of wrenches I would probably never use again, I just paid a mechanic to do it. Took him half an hour and cost me $35. The wrenches cost more than that.

Thanks, I'll check with my local mechanic first. Thought it might be more expensive. Looking at a Haynes manual it seemed easy enough but the wrench thing was my hang up too.

Mead, it is very easy to change that fan clutch. A 12" adjustable/ Crescent wrench and a pair of locking pliers/ Vise-Grips is all I used and it took all of 3 minutes. Mine is an '00 nad has the one large nut that holds the clutch to the waterpump.
