Subject: P0420 help IP: Logged
Message: Hi all. Thanks for all the help in the past...but now I have a new prob. Check Engine light came on yesterday and the boys down at advanced auto parts were kind enough to scan the OBD for free. The scan showed my 99 Dak (3.9L V6, 81k miles) threw code P0420. Can anyone tell me what that is and if I can fix myself?
Thanks,
Olindo

Message: P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
Sounds like either the downstream O2 sensor or the catcon is going bad.

Message: Thanks Daddio. Since the truck seems to be running fine, I raised an eyebrow when the autozone guy said upstream sensor...when I know the downstream sensor give catcon feedback. Thanks for confirming what I expected. I think it's easier to start w/ sensor replacement. Any tips on replacement, sensor manufacturer's to avoid...etc?
Thanks,
Olindo.

Message: If you can find them locally, the NGK/NTK brand have gotten good reviews from some people here. You can buy them direct from NGK through their website. And if it were me, I'd buy the stock replacement and not the universal fit. You would have to cut and solder your old connector with the universal. But hey, if you're comfortable splicing and soldering go for it and save a few more bucks.

Message: Hey Daddio...need advice. So I order the O2 sensor and it comes in about 5 days later. I wait until the weekend to replace it...but by then the CEL goes out. Should I replace it anyway and, with my luck, risk breaking something that ain't broke..or just leave it be until the light comes on again?
thanks,

Message: Like the old saying goes " If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Save it for later. That code coming up could have been just a ghost in the machine.
