Subject: New to the board! IP: Logged
Message: Hey everybody, I am new to the board. I just picked up a new to
me 2000 Dodge Dakota regular Cab 4x4 Sport (with no options
in it, the way I like it). It has 239k on the clock, and I dont know
much about the vehicle history since it was bought for me by an
auto broker. Cost of the truck plus replacing the rear shocks,
the muffler and tailpipe, headlights has been just under 2k so
far.
It has a cylinder misfire CEL P0304. What are my chances that a
tune up with new plugs, wires, cap and rotor will take care of
this? Also, I smell a faint gas smell, would this be caused by the
cylinder misfire if there is unspent fuel being pushed out?
One last newbie question, do you guys have any
recommendations on where to buy replacement parts? I am
getting a second upper and lower radiator support since it has a
bit of rust on it, and some new quarter panels for the front end,
but am curious about stuff like u-joints and the sort.
Sorry for the newbie questions, I have lurked here for a few
weeks and done searching but was hoping for the most up to
date information possible.
Thanks!

Message: Welcome, As far as used parts, have you tried www.car-part.com? It can search yards across the U.S. and Canada.
A tuneup with quality parts just might get rid of that P0304. Use a cap and rotor with brass contacts and either NGK FR5 plugs or Bosch reg. platinums, one heat range colder than stock.

Message: There are several other things that you could look at. First thing would be to pull the spark plug on cylinder #4 since the P0304 would indicate a misfire on that cylinder. If it is fouled/ black it could be a leaky injector, bad plug or wire.
If it is white, it's leaning out so it could be the injector isn't firing or clogged. Try using a can of Seafoam. Follow the dircetions on the can. After performing the tune up, reset the PCM then wait to see if the code comes back.

Message: so, the spark plugs, fuel injectors and other tune up work did not
work for my issue. On to a compression test it goes.
Recommendations on best place to buy used and new motors? You
know, just in case?

Message: Truck is getting a new motor put in this upcoming week. If I wasnt
in dire need of this truck I would attempt it myself, but I dont have
the time.
The donor motor is 80k on the clock, and works perfectly. came
from a rear end collision truck.
